The Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce series of Sherlock Holmes films are still fun to watch. These portrayals are locked in my mind permanently, as I enjoyed these movies on low budget UHF TV stations in the 70s long before reading any of the books ...
When Basil Rathbone goes "undercover", his talent for song and dance and vocal disguise is amazing ...
A vastly underrated British actor ...
He's one of my favorites!
Before Sherlock Holmes, he played detective Philo Vance in
The Bishop Murder Case (1930).
Most people forget (or don't know) he was the main baddie (Sir Guy of Gisbourne) in
The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938). His sword fight with Errol Flynn is iconic.
He was the romantic lead in many movies like
The Last of Mrs. Cheyney (1929).
In
Tower of London (1939), he was the infamous sociopath Richard III, and he played the charmingly befuddled King Louis XI in
If I were King (1938).
I think he was great even in his small roles in
Bathing Beauty (1944) and
The Ghost in the Invisible Bikini (1966) (although, admittedly, not great enough to justify watching either one of those movies more than once).
TCM (Turner Classic Movies) has some of his movies scheduled:
THE ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD (1938) APRIL 07
BATHING BEAUTY (1944) APRIL 14
THE LAST DAYS OF POMPEII (1935) MAY 14
TOWER OF LONDON (1939) MAY 18
