How is the button throw compared to the 19e?

It's about the same - it looks like they used the same spring....but the throw on the 8w is a little shorter, and the button is a much larger diameter, so it feels different. It's a little "gritty" feeling out of the box (so were my 19s), but it already feels a lot smoother with use.

I just re-assembled it with two opposing ring magnets (no spring) and it feels terrific. The button-throw is about 1mm and pinky-push friendly, but it's a little wobbly when you set it down. Doesn't fire, but it wobbles around like a bobble-head.... I'm still fiddling with a few other ideas though...
Nice little mod.

OK...got the 8w switch apart after an all-night soak in various solvents (Hoppes#9, Kroil, and finally Alchohol) and whacking it again with my brass hammer (just for tradition). Finally came apart using a needle-nose and padded vice-grips. Chewed up the fire button and the button post just a little, but nothing I can't live with. A little polishing will take most of the goobers off the edge of the switch, or I might just knurl it.

The threads on the center post were filled with some nasty nasty glue...even when it started giving way, it was still a bear to keep unscrewing the switch until I got it totally out. I even thought it wasn't working until I looked carefully and saw that the fire button was not turning as I was unscrewing the post with the needle-nose vice-grips. It was still very difficult to turn...I almost thought I was going to break the threads off of the post. I can't figure out why they would put nice finger grooves on that post if you can't use your fingers to unscrew it.... Someone at Sigelei must have a partner in the glue business.....

To be honest, if you don't mind the long/stiff button throw on this thing, or want to put a softer spring in it, there's not much reason to take the switch apart....not really anything in there that needs polishing - it hits pretty well right out of the box. I might play around with a few things (those gold ring-magnets are a perfect fit :p ), but JMHO...no need to butcher this one.

In 18350 mode, it's a nice little pocket rocket (next to an antique 10 Ga shotgun shell).
Nice little mechanical for the money...can't wait until I get my 18650 tube so I can try it with an 18500 & a Kick. :2cool:

Thanks alot for sharing pictures of the switch. I like the metal deck of this switch much better than the 19's delrin cup. Is the black delrin insulator threaded or just glued into place?

I can't tell - it doesn't appear to be threaded, but it might be glued, or a very tight friction fit. I really haven't messed with it that much.

the top cap had to go X| can't stand it

I just got my 8W in the mail yesterday... the thing is pretty sweet. I also have the SG1 hybrid kit, which will screw onto the mod just fine.... but the battery is to long for it to fit! I got the 18650 tube model. Sucks, I was hoping the thing would work like that. How did you get your battery and SG1 to fit?

My new all-time favorite Mechanical... It's like the Oddy was made for the 8w.... Sigelei Hybrid anyone? (The entire thing fits in the palm of your hand):

I was skeptical at first ordering the 18350 tube for the 8w, but now I'm glad I did (still have the 18650 tube coming).

I still have some issues to work out with the battery length (no battery in the tube right now), but it's just a matter of a millimeter or so to get it to sit completely flush. I only have nipple-top 18350s at the moment, so a flat-top will probably do it.

i guess everyone had to pull back on the top pin and screw for 18350's to even touch and work with the stock 8W cap... only way it makes since the hybrid connector is working on everyone's 18350's. Guess i should have got the 350 tube. Only reason i didn't is because i got so damn many anyway. Wish they would have made the 18650 tube "350ish" worth of batter space bigger than the 18350 tube.... it would have worked for everyone that way.

oh well, guess i'll be figuring out some modification to use a 18500 and the hybrid kit... maybe a kick, maybe a vape safe chip, maybe an extra long genesis post with nut on the end... still thinking.

VaporTek is selling the 8w tubes (650 or 350) on a pre-order for about $8, so you can configure them any way you want. I'm hoping they also come out with an 18500 tube in the future....best of all worlds.

Thanks ... Yep. Just a few minutes with a felt wheel & white rouge & it polished out pretty nice. I'm thinking of finding some place that can laser-engrave a little pirate ship on the lower section of the tube - seems appropriate for a Caravela Clone :)

I did an initial review of my 18350 8W on another thread. My Artemas Tanks would not fire because the 510 connector was not high enough. I had to file off the bottom of the top cap about 1/32 inch so it threaded lower, thereby exposing more of the 510 connection and things work OK now. I still am having difficulties getting accustomed to the bottom fire button, which as you may know is extremely stiff. I am hoping it will become smoother and easier to fire after some use. This is my personal opinion, but I think the KTS Storm flat top is a much better buy at below $20.00. I am so glad I never did get in line to purchase a real Caravella at 10 to 15 times the cost.

Thanks for the comments on the Vape Safe folks. As noob as noob can get with the mechanical mods... been reading a lot for months and am now getting all the gear bought. Have 3 Sigelei MM's already here, a Zmax V5 on the first preorder and the other gear is staring to show up. Anyway, I did order some Vape Safe fuses after my first post on them tonight since I'll be using "store bought" everything at first while I start learning about making my own. Lucky in that a gent met here on ECF who only does mods has been helping, lives about 30 minutes away and has invited me over when the rest of my gear gets here.
