all the information i've sifted through pertaining to mechanical mods in the past few weeks suggests that there doesn't yet exist a sub-$80 model that isn't necessary to modify in some way in order to achieve an acceptable level of voltage drop.
so my new question is, what's the cheapest, readily-available mechanical mod that is good to go as-is; out of the box? are there even such things? do people have to modify even their caravelas etc?
Hey, you know that they are called "mods" for a reason, right?
Seriously, what WinchellNomNom said is spot-on. "Everyone has a different level they consider acceptable."
That applies to appearance, machining, features, voltage drop, and perhaps most importantly... price. Most of the voltage drop you might read people complaining about is in a
fraction of one volt. Even the cheapest Chinese mod wouldn't have any market at all if they didn't perform at least reasonably "out of the box".
Most of the modifications you will read about are simple, inexpensive ways of gaining back even a tenth of one volt in voltage drop. They are small improvements to a relatively small problem. Bigger improvements aren't improvements at all... they are fixing design or QC issues that the manufacturer chose to ignore. Or they are completely cosmetic. And like anything cheap and Chinese you will find that out of a lot of 1000 units you may get an oddball that got too much of this or not enough of that. One guy complains about ONE unit he had the misfortune to purchase... This does not necessarily mean that the entire model line is flawed.
I LOVE my Sig #8 and hope I am at least as happy with my #19 when I eventually receive it. How happy? My Vamo collects dust now, unless I'm using it as a multimeter. I am SO glad I didn't buy a Provari because it would be serving the same purpose. Yes, I like my $30 Chinese mechanical more than I would enjoy a $200 VV mod.
