Silicosis has been discussed here before. There is two types of silica and only one causes silicosis. There is no definite answer that I've seen to say it is a threat with the type of silica used in vaping. What is also not definite is if we are getting any in our lungs but it doesn't seem that way to me.

However, if you want to be on the safe side - Only buy rebuildable clearomizers. You can pull the silica wicks out and replace with something else. Find yarn that is 100% cotton and white (white doesn't have dyes) or 100% cotton white embroidery floss. You could also just roll a cotton ball strand into a wick but yarn and floss work better. A thin thread puller or bead threader can help you pull the new wick into the coil or you can just throw the new one on top of the coil. If you feel a little mechanically inclined you can just rebuild the coil so you can just wrap it instead of threading.

As mentioned there are other options such as ss mesh. And as mentioned, not all cartos or clearos have. Most cartos don't and most clearos do. If the item description doesn't say it is probably the norm.
