Cowtown, USA. Where the West begins.
I've made the comparison before.
Most of us can have a perfectly satisfying experience with off the shelf hardware from Walmart.
Other people are into high end rods/reels, or tying their own flies, or fancy fishing boats, or whatever.
I tend to split the difference.
I buy the best hardware I can afford.
Not always top end, but always with an eye on quality.
Ain't that the ever lovin' truth. I like top end gear, but I don't like the prices they ask. So I wait until somebody effs one up, then buy it cheap and rebuild it. I think the only new-new fishing reel I ever bought was a Penn Sargus baitcast. An odd entry for Penn, they don't do small fish; this one only held about 100yds of braid and a flouro topshot, 6lbs of drag, little bitty crank handle, no leverage at all hardly. But I love the brand, and I had never seen a lo-pro baitcast reel from them before, so I bought it. Fished it about half a season and broke out my 965 round reels again, selling the Sargus off on eBay. Don't think I'll ever see one again. They only sold them one or two seasons. I guess they don't like them either.

And remind me to tell you the story about the brand-new 42' Hatteras I bought after an idiot ripped the keel out on an oyster reef and sank it in about 8 feet of water in the bay, lol.

I've had alligator jerky, and it was the best jerky I've ever eaten, seriously.

An Alligator Gar is a fish. They can get HUGE. I've seen a 120 lb gar that some recreational shrimpers caught in their net. That fish shredded the net and only came out of the water because the snout got tangled in what was left of the tickle chain.

Never seen one quite that big, but I saw a 7 footer once that went 100 lbs. Mean and nasty, they are; tons of fight on the end of a rod. Tasty though, if you know how to cook them and don't mind dulling an axe to get to the meat.

Heh... @Wraith504 wan't kidding about the "armor." Scales the size of silver dollars and just as hard.

One day, I'll get you to show me how to wick with rayon while you tell me the Hatteras yarn.

In the great scheme of things sport fishing in general is a lousy way to acquire food. It’s about the experience not the net weight of fish.
When heading out for a day at the lake I've often told people, "I'm going fishing. And I might even put bait on the hook". :D

In the grocery store last week I saw..... drum roll... Salmon Bacon... going to get some for Christmas breakfast.
You’re not referring to lox are you? Smoked, Thin sliced, oily, deep orange? If so frying it is a minor sin. It should be eaten raw. On dunkelbrot. With cream cheese and maybe some nice capers.

Do not noodle for alligator gar. It would be bad.
This is truth! The one im holding in the picture flailed around when i was dragging him up the shore and hit my in the shoulder shredding my shirt and leaving me with some nice teeth scrapes on the shoulder bleeding. They can live a long time out of water as well.

The easy way to catch them is with nylon rope it tangles in the snout and teeth then you just drag them in. It is much more of a fight and skill to hook em on a rod n reel and fight them in.

Well I’ve never fried it so I’m not sure what might result. It might be more or less edible

They've done something different to it I imagine as it's actually salmon bacon, not lox.

We are proud to announce the launch of our new award winning Salmon Bacon. The amazing feature of this product, apart from being healthy, is it looks and tastes exactly like bacon made from pork!

MacKnight Salmon Bacon

FYI, you can fry smoked salmon, carefully.

Anyone else ever been fishing in Alaska? I don't do freshwater fishing, just saltwater. I love it!

Had gone out of Ketchikan and Sitka only, before 2016. Caught some really nice-sized King and Silver Salmon, some <60lb. halibut, and quite a few Rockfish.

Then...I caught a 105lb. and a 28lb. halibut (per daily limits on size & number) and a bunch of Rockfish in summer 2016 in the Gulf of Alaska, when we went out from Valdez. Also caught an 89lb. and a 25lb. halibut for my 16 year old niece who was really seasick (green around the gills, sweaty, crying, etc.). Captain said as long as she at least touched the pole for a few minutes before I brought them in...they could count as hers for the day.

Planning on going out of Whittier, and maybe Homer, this coming summer, when some of us are going up again for 17 days. Lots to see and do in Alaska, so I've been 7 times since 1996!

ETA: Forgot to add how I think fishing has been similar to vaping for me, so...

My set-ups I vaped with for the first 2 years were very satisfying, and they did their job to keep me off the smokes. However, when I learned on here how to DIY, and then later...to use drippers and tanks that required building and rebuilding...I hit my absolutely "happy spot" with vaping.

With the fishing I mentioned above, I'd definitely had fun, and was more than satisfied with the fish I'd caught prior to 2016. But, when I went out with a better, more experienced, and more knowledgeable captain, and caught the big halibut...I was then in my "happy spot" with fishing in Alaska.
