Ain't that the ever lovin' truth. I like top end gear, but I don't like the prices they ask. So I wait until somebody effs one up, then buy it cheap and rebuild it. I think the only new-new fishing reel I ever bought was a Penn Sargus baitcast. An odd entry for Penn, they don't do small fish; this one only held about 100yds of braid and a flouro topshot, 6lbs of drag, little bitty crank handle, no leverage at all hardly. But I love the brand, and I had never seen a lo-pro baitcast reel from them before, so I bought it. Fished it about half a season and broke out my 965 round reels again, selling the Sargus off on eBay. Don't think I'll ever see one again. They only sold them one or two seasons. I guess they don't like them either.I've made the comparison before.
Most of us can have a perfectly satisfying experience with off the shelf hardware from Walmart.
Other people are into high end rods/reels, or tying their own flies, or fancy fishing boats, or whatever.
I tend to split the difference.
I buy the best hardware I can afford.
Not always top end, but always with an eye on quality.
And remind me to tell you the story about the brand-new 42' Hatteras I bought after an idiot ripped the keel out on an oyster reef and sank it in about 8 feet of water in the bay, lol.
