Hey again. I'm kind of in a dilemma and thought I could turn to you guys for some help. So, yesterday, I found this site and got really interested into purchasing an e-cig as an alternative to smoking. Well, today, I was looking at sites people recommended me, and my friend (who does not smoke) asks what I'm looking at. I tell him I'm trying to break my smoking habits. So he continues to watch me browse through a selection of items. He then sees that there are 0mg liquids and tells me that he wants to order some e-cigs as well. I tell him that starting e-cig smoking from a non-smoker isn't a good idea. Could any of you back me up on this? (He thinks that he can start smoking with e-cigs because of less chemicals, but I am afraid that it may be a prereq. to real smoking in his case. Also, while I'm trying to fix my habits, I believe he thinks it's just some kind of toy he can use to show off. He's a real good friend and I don't want him going into cigarette stuff like I did. You can call me an idiot, but I regret a lot of the smoking I've done in the past. I just don't want him to follow down the same road.)

Hey, adults can make their own decisions. If he wants to smoke, that's his business. You warned him, the media warned him, and every busybody in sight will warn him if he starts.

I must confess, however, I just don't to see the danger with nicotine-free liquid in an e-cig.

See, the neat thing about smoking is that it's something that people actually enjoy. If he can get two-thirds the pleasure of smoking without all that nasty risk and addiction potential, who are you to say he shouldn't?

You're most definitely not an idiot. I agree with everything you say.

I can't say whether using e-cigs will lead to smoking. They haven't been around long enough to have any kind of track record. Most of us find cigarettes taste bad once we discover e-cigs. But it certainly is possible, and as you know it's damn near impossible to quit once you start.

If it were me, I would go ahead and get the e-cig, and continue to discourage my non-smoking friend. Maybe you can try to point out that even without nicotine, he'd be starting a routine that becomes an addiction, as the hand-to-mouth motions, inhaling, etc. do become habits that are reinforced constantly. For us, doing it with e-cigs is a way to do what we are already addicted to without the carcinogenics an CO. For a non-smoker, its likely to become a new addiction, with or without nicotine.

here is my .02 cents for you and your friend.
1. ask him why he wants to vape in the first place.
if his choice is out of a call for attention then give him some more and request that he reconsider his choice. in your case it is an attempt to cut back or off of analog so it is not out of a call for attention.

2.if he should want one anyway then advise him to only use 0nic and abdication can happen to anyone one who uses more then 0nic juice nic is still addictive just not as much as a regular analog. ramblin has brought up a good point please keep that in mind as well

3. please also have him do his own research into juice and devices and even do a cost analysis for him. it will cost him more money to start something that he has never done. in your case you are trying to save money vs analogs.

I should clarify my position. I wouldn't encourage a non-smoker to take up vaping -- I may even try to dissuade them -- but I'm not going to lose any sleep over an adult user taking up the habit.

Like I said earlier: smoking is a pleasure. It's an activity many people enjoy. If an adult non-smoker chooses to take up smoking I'd say that picking up a 0mg e-pipe is immeasurably better than picking up a pack of cigarettes.

I NEVER liked coffee until about 3 years ago when my friend talked me into getting a frap from Starbucks and I was hooked.

Too bad there wasn't a forum like this one to save me from Starbucks. You know caffiene in large amounts is toxic!!! Now I have picked up another habit. Damn my friend!

Oh yeah...NM...I am an adult, who can make choices for myself.

I don't know, if he wants 0 nic, what's the problem(point?) anyway? It seems kind of odd that he would want to do this, but he isn't doing anything nearly as harmful as smoking a real cigarette and he's even taking away the addictive element. It would PROBABLY be best for him not to inhale ANYTHING other than air, but that's his choice.

This is not the same as smoking a real cigarette, I would even fail to see it as a gateway to a real cigarette because anologs(as someone already stated) compared to the e-cig, taste like CRAP.

Vaping 0 nic peanut butter cup or strawberry flavor probably tastes a heck of a lot better than inhaling cancer. Not to mention these are smoother as well. So I doubt he would pick up a real cigarette as a result, and if he did, I would say it's VERY likely he would put it down IMMEDIATELY.

Just my two cents. I don't necessarily recommend it, but I don't see the problem either.

In reference to the original post:

I had an experience similar to this Monday when my new e-cigs came in. I got 2 shipments from 2 different suppliers at the same time. Well my bf had been nagging me to quit analogs permanently for months (he's never even had a drag off a real cig in his life) so I'd told him I would when these packages arrived, so when they did I proudly pulled them out and start showing them to him and explaining the differences (I have a bunch of 901's from months ago, got in 2 510's and 4 of skyrl's that I don't know the modle of) well he politely snatches one out of the pile and starts puffing on it! I was like  "WTF ARE YOU DOING!" (i order the 36mg juice) over the course of the evening (amid LOTS of protests from me) ended up smoking about 2 analogs worth (1 puff at a time) Then he tells me he wants me to get him some juice with no nicotine so that he can vape too! .. My initial reaction was to tell him NO WAY, but as an adult he has the right to make his own choices, so I am going to get him some 0nic juice (he's already confiscated 1 of my skyrl's and 1 of my 901's) because he is adament that he wan'ts to take them to work (he works at a gas station) and show them to customers. Aparently he gets about 10 people a day talking about how they want to quit... so he has a good reason behind it, but my initial reaction was that my bad habits were rubbing off on him :( made me feel like a bad person

I just thought I would chime in here with a bit of personal observation.

I have had several friends inquire about ecigs and I give the best info based on personal experience that I can, then I refer them here to the forums and let them peruse all the info they can.

One of those who inquired at a party is a long-time-quit former smoker who when she found out there was 0-nic juice available, she was elated. She ordered and now loves vaping her different conconctions with no nic.

She said she had so missed the sensation, but never wanted to get hooked on nic again. She and her husband are really enjoying the occasional session of vaping and mixing their own special recipes and having that enjoyment without the nic habit hovering over them.

This has been several months ago, and she tells me now that she has not once considered adding the nic back into her vape.

However, she is enjoying the vaping without all the nic complication.

Myself, I have not yet broken my nic addiction, but I have totally gotten away from analogs and feel that every dime I spend on my vaping is money well spent.

There are those who might let a new addiction take them to the "dark side", but I don't think it will be common problem. Just IMHO.

I'd first say RUN! Run FAR away. Then I'd say please stick to no nic... and then - well... you're a grownup.

My husband (who really hates cigarette smoking) loves an occasional cigar. I got him an e-cigar and some no nic juice for Fathers Day. Why? Well... I finally got the smoke stink out of my house! Also - even for that occasional cigar - why not use the safer alternative? Hes tried my e-cigs and liked the flavors - and loves that there's no lingering smell.

Hi Monchan

You're being a good friend to this guy. This dilemma pops up every couple of months and the consensus seems to be it's never a good idea for non-smokers to play with these things (I certainly think so). Point out to him that you wouldn't be blowing all this cash on alternatives if you were in a position to do without them, like he is right now.

I would continue to discourage any friend of mine who wanted to try this if they were a non-smoker....

The nicotine is NOT the only thing we're addicted to. It's the whole ritual - the inhale, having something to do with our hands, the feel of the substance in the mouth, etc, etc.

I'm hoping I'm wrong, but what happens if the FDA does get punchy and starts forcefully blocking importations? Now, you've got a habit with no supplies.....what are you going to go to? I'm guessing the only thing left on the marketplace.......cigs.

make sure he orders a cig that u like(it will be a free one for you when he's done being curious)..............cause I can say with 0nic I wouldn't like these (too much) but if cigarettes would have had 0nic I would have absolutely never got hooked.

just remember if he goes for the nicotine.......sabotage his ecig
