You want the wick to be tight but still loose enough to slide inside the coil. When cotton is saturated it will expand and fill the coil perfectly.
If the cotton it real tight it will not wick correctly then you get dry hits.
Most of the time leaking is causdf by not enough wick in the coils of the tails was cut too short.
If you use Dacron I am not the person to answer your question.
+1 to @Two_Bears I don't have a silverplay, but that's good advice. It's much the same for rayon, which I wick, but it doesn't expand like cotton so you eant to fill the coil pretty full.
I have the Silver Play V2, and I wick with rayon. My current build is using 26g Ti wire and rayon wicks.
Let me know what gauge wire you are using and what wick material and I'll get you pointed in the right direction. Also, what mod are you running it on?

Okay, I'd say stay with your 2.5mm I.D., use the 26g Kanthal, dual coils 8 wraps each should put you at a total of 0.5 ohms.
Follow what Two_Bears said earlier with the wicks. You don't want the cotton to be too loose nor too tight. I had too much trouble with cotton, and getting it to not leak was a PITA! That's one of the reasons I run rayon in mine now. Well, that and the fact that I've not touched my coils or wicks in over a month, put 300 ml of juice through it, and everything still tastes perfect.
The best advice I can give you with the cotton is to make sure you have some actually IN the juice channel, but it's a struggle to get the right amount. Just like inside the coil, too much and it chokes off and won't wick, but too little and it just leaks out of the airhole.

Thanks for the help. The vape shop was able to help me get a build in it. I have 26g 6 wraps dual coils 0.35 ohms. What wattage should I be running? How long till the cotton has to be replaced? I am now wicking with cotton bacon version 2.0
When you scorch the wick you will know it and back off a few watts to prevent burniy the cotton.
The cotton should be replaced when the flavor is off.
It varies by the juices you are using and your vaping style
One or more of three issues are going on.
1. Too much cotton crammed in the coil.
2. You are vaping 70% vg of higher ejuice
3. You need to back down on the wattage.
I figured it out, one of the screws came lose insdie on the coil post
