Small Shards Around Wick/Coil

First I apologize if I'm not posting correctly. I just signed up and can't post in any other forum because I haven't posted 5 yet here.

I just cleaned out my coil and found small metallic shards around and within the wick. I really don't want to inhale this. Does anyone know what causes these and what they are? I have put a piece of cotton in the driptip to act as a filter, but its cutting down on the pull. I am looking at rebuilding with cotton. I'm thinking these shards are crystallized silicate from the wick?

I am using an Itaste VV with a Kanger protank 2 mini. Stock coils and vaping at about 3.8 volts with a 2.2ohm resistance reading.

Thanks

silica rope and silica wick are nice names, but if you thing "fibre glass" and look at it..... maybe you get the picture.

pick at it with some tweezers and it will start to come apart and you can pull more and more of it out and blow it out to get all out then - actually dryburn the coil first to get any gunk off it other wise you wont be able to pull the wick out;
then pull some cotton through; you'll be tempted to twist and squish the cotton into a compressed thread - don't -just twist one end to get it to thread through and pull the rest fluffily through after; clip the ends and reassemble; cotton wicks alot better than the silica wick; I find I can vape at higher wattages on the fluffy cotton than on the silica.
