Smaller wick when rebuilding an EVOD/Protank head

I'm hoping that someone can school me before I make an attempt at rebuilding an EVOD/Protank head. I watched all the videos and the thread on rebuilding the heads, and then ordered some silica wick and wire. What I didn't do was pay attention to the thickness of silica wick that is supposed to be used. I ended up ordering 1mm thickness wick before realizing that the tutorials call for 2mm. I am wondering if I would be able to use it anyway, double it over maybe, or if I by using the thinner wick I will be doomed to leakage.

For starters I havn't rebuilt a protank coil yet. However, my buddy recommended to me while rebuilding to use 3mm wick for the thickness but said if you can only find smaller sizes it is fine, you just have to double it up. Ex. Instead of just cutting one piece of wick, cut two and wrap the coil around them both. It will thicken up the coil to prevent your concern. I have done this on a dripper and it worked perfectly, and used just a single strand on my CE5's and it worked okay. I do feel though as I need to use two strips on my CE5's and vivi nova heads because the hit was more airy than normal. Haven't tried it yet. So all in all, I would simply suggest to double up your wick and go from there.

the best thickness I've found for evod and protank heads is 3mm if you don't use a top "flavor wick". I never get leaks or a choked wick. if you use a hollow wick such as ekowool , 2mm works best. 5/4 wrap of 32g kanthal with 2mm ekowool i find works the best after doing a couple dozen rebuilds ;)

but if you only have 1mm normal silica wick, cut 3 strands and coil away.

I'm now using 3 mm silica for my Protank heads as well, and it works perfectly.
But initially, all I had was 1 mm silica. So what I did, was cut off a piece, about 2 inches or so, and then "loop it" - like if you wanted to roll it up. Get what I'm trying to say? That way, I ended up with a 4x1 mm silica wick, which I then wrapped the coil around (used a needle to stabilize/make a bit of a gap, in case I wrapped it too tight).
Perfect fit, no leaks. But it is a bit fiddly and DO NOT cut off the "loop ends" of the wick, until after you're done making the coil, as the short 1 mm strands will simply somewhat dissolve/unwrap.

When you say "like you wanted to roll it up", do you mean like most people roll up a garden hose? And you essentially did it twice to end up with four wick lines being used inside the coil?

Basically. If you coil it twice and pinch in the middle for the coil you get 4 wicks in the middle. They function more or less similar to one larger wick.

Yup, like you would roll up a garden hose, then pinch it at the middle, to get 4x1mm silica, then wrap the coil around it, fit it into the head completely, and then trim off the "loop ends" (sorry, English is not my first language) at the very end of the process :)
