First off, thanks for this community and all the helpful folks that make it such a resource for us new peeps coming along. This being my introductory post I wanted to convey how I felt about the costs associated with switching to vaping after nearly 40 years of pack a day smoking and ask a couple of questions concerning making the experience as pleasant as possible.

On the issue of cost, I have read an awful lot where folks seemed quite concerned on the cost of getting started and worrying about buying something that didnt quite work out for them. While I can appreciate being frugal and especially these days I just cant shake the main thought that was in my head when when I started ordering things which was the $400 a month I currently spend (before last Saturday anyhow) on analogs. I figured if I spend even a couple of months worth of analogs I will be in the black before my lungs clear (they are already feeling much better), I will be able to try some different things hopefully increasing the chances this will stick with both the wife and I. Plus we will have supplies and backup hardware to prevent the dreaded downtime waiting on the mail and slipping back to the red pack (my last one of which remains unopened on my desk) at $50 a carton.

So with this in mind I bought 3 510 starter kits from AquaVapor, I did look around and the price was fair and we got a lot of stuff like chargers and the cool PCC to keep batteries going on the go. Enough hardware for 3 people since my wife also got her mother to come along for the ride. I picked up a couple tank and atomizer setups for the 510, blank carts and a couple of other pieces of kit like the smokeymizer which I think I like other than the damned little rubber plug and some dual coil carts that sadly did not get shipped but are now on their way. They ended up putting in a DCT which is a huge tank (3.5) mil with a dual coil atomizer in it, they are sending a return label but I think I may keep it and pay the $11.95. Thing is huge and I would not even try it on the 510 but I have an eGo waiting at the Post Office to be picked up tomorrow and it might be pretty nice on that.

More on the eGo, the 510 seems to work out great for the wife and MiL but I go through the batteries too fast and the tiny tanks even faster which is why I decided already to move to something with a little more punch to it. I got the 900 batteries, extra battery, atomizer, tanks and of course a carrying case. Hoping this will be the performer it appears to be in my reading on it.

Sooo, this brings us up to about day three... this is the point where plunging into DiY makes sense right? A trip to onestopdiyshop for flavors and myfreedomsmokes for nic juice and dilutants and I am set with something like 85 flavors and enough base to make up about a liter and a half of mix (a little at a time of course). This should be enough for all three of us for the next six months other than getting more flavor once we decide what we really like.

My point in all of this is that I have fully justified what is a considerable expense on our meager budget by looking at it like we would spend it anyhow over the next two months (not even counting what the MiL would spend and they really dont have any extra money to spend on analogs). All total about $600 in which also gets the wife fully committed because she is too cheap to waste anything :)

Now on to my questions and believe me I have looked but I will also honestly say I have probably not looked as much as I probably should. Just hoping maybe someone can point me in the right direction. What I am looking for is information on getting the most out of the experience of vaping. For the first several days I got a lot of harsh burnt hits and very little flavor. Yesterday I changed up my puffing style by keying into what some have called sipping and things have gotten much better. Now I am beginning the draw before hitting the button then only holding it for a second or two, continuing the draw and doing this a couple more times for a nice big smooth hit (most of the time). If I dont get it quite right sometimes there is still that harsh burnt hit. Is there a board on this forum for technique?

Also is there any concise information as to the shelf life of flavors and base liquids? I figure if I put date labels on the bottles I would pass them on to someone who isnt as fortunate to be able to purchase a fairly large collection to help get them going and resfresh the 'Lab' once a year or so with the flavors we find we like using.

Well I suppose this was long winded enough for a first post, again thanks to the trail blazers who were out on the front lines getting this all to the point where it is now and hopefully I will in the future be able to add something of my own. As my nick indicates I tend to toss a lot of focus into something I become passionate about and that usually means along with my other skills and creativity something interesting will come out so who knows.

Well said, and I totally agree. Vaping is far cheaper and better value.

Hi OCD....you have lots of things to address but let me go to the actual technique of vaping. Push the button for 1/2 to 1 sec..then drag...lightly..smoothly....for about 2-3 secs. Then before the last part of the drag, release the button as the atomizer is still producing vapor. Then inhale slowly, hold for a second, then exhale through both your mouth and nostrils. This technique will provide a better nicotine retention and a more satisfying throat hit.

As far as the rest of your post...performing this technique will slow down the need for higher voltage bats and gear. I use eGo's (750 mha) and am fine throughout the day...charging at night..but then again, I didn't smoke 2 pk. per day either. Just a suggestion to get the most out of your equipment. Some here vape so much, I can't even imagine...like I said in a previous post..someone is going to figure out a way to hook up a car battery with a water .... that will surpass Mt. St. Helens in vapor. The trick is to find that "sweet" spot for YOU.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't dual carts sound like a bad idea for little ol 510 batts, I'm assuming you're saving them for the ego, but I was told to be careful when attaching duals or even low resistance attys to anything to small to handle it. I don't want you getting curious and sticking it on a little 510 and destroying your battery. I also found (If anyone can correct me on this, I'm only speaking from limited trial and error exp), But I find with cartomizers, from a fresh one, as it deteriorates and the vaping get's tighter, I have to adjust my vaping style from straight dragging, to holding the button, and more just waiting for my mouth to fill with heated vapour, then fine tuning it depending on how cool or hot I want the air, and then once my mouth is full, inhaling a breath of air and then I get this nice spike of taste on the back of my throat). This is just from my trial and error, it kinda feels like learning how to play an instrument where you have to adjust your technique depending on the freshness of the cartridge or cartomizer. Also I personally reccomend against the 510t (t for tank system). It didn't work out for me, I spent so much time trying to tweak just to avoid nasty plastic tastes, absolutely horrible. But I think it might of had something to do with cold Canadian winter, the tank system and 50/50 PG VG juice. Anyways, welcome to ECF. Also as far as I can tell, juice lasts a reallllly long time as long as you keep it in a dark cool dry space. Like a cupboard type deal. And alot of juices get better as they mature. Some juices will taste stronger and fuller a few weeks after theyve just been mixed. If you want to speed up the process, ask around about steeping, I've read several approaches from airing them, or some even boil. I'm not sure which is best, and I think it might also depend on the type of juice you order.

Oh yeah, and welcome to ECF. I personally knew that this was the place for me, when I noticed that I spent all my spare time creeping this site. I hope you spend many hours hitting the "today's post" button to see if anyone posted anything new :)

Thanks for the welcome all.

azzaman, yes certainly much more economical and even more so once past this initial gearing up and mixing my own juice.

FreeFire, yes that gives a good hit. My issue is mainly in letting it go a little too long, as I understand the way these work is the wick will become depleted of juice and you will toast the wick and get the burned taste. I am a pretty big guy with big lungs that surprisingly have a lot of power in them after all those years of smoking so I like a deep draw and this adds up to time on the button which in turn means pushing that fine line between bliss and burnt.

By starting the draw before hitting the button it helps the juice draw through the wick right? Then holding the button for a couple of seconds and letting go for a few while continuing the draw it should be pulling more juice in to the coil. I will do this three or four times during a 12 or 15 second hit trying to keep the juice moving to the coil without getting that terrible dry, burnt pull. The exhale just like you said on a good hit is great with loads of flavor and thick clouds of vapor.

Was hoping maybe there was a section on the forum here dealing specifically with technique that I have just somehow missed.

2 years sounds great kabonk. The nic base is the one thing that probably holds the most concern as you never know when some greased palms succeed in limiting our freedoms. With a supply like that it would give plenty of time to find an alternative should things go sour.

Madsen, I have used carts filled with a needle until well saturated. Used a tank and atomizer on the 510 and now vaping on a smokeymizer which I would say is like a tank and atomizer in one (like this btw with the 1.2 ml capacity and low cost but that tiny plug could prove to be a pain) and will get the odd burned hit from time to time still. I am getting better using the technique described above but still looking for tips.

Hi Tony, it sounds like you are filling your mouth then inhaling? I am drawing it right down letting some air in around the mouthpiece as I draw. Just a nice long 12 to 15 second draw bringing in air both through the cig and around it with periodic button presses long enough to make vapor but not so long that the coil runs out of juice and the taste ends up going south.

I ordered 30 ml bottle and considering I am prepping for 3 I think this will work out good. Looks like I will be between 2 and 5 mls a day myself depending on how hard I hit it (more at the computer, less when I am outside busy) so I think the air time on the opened bottles should pose too much of a problem.

I have read quite a lot on the DiY stuff so I think I have the concept of steeping and juices aging into their own (accelerated with warmth). Also got some MTS coming which sounds like it helps to round things out.

...I take big ol' long, slow deep hits(8-12secs) off of my PV(usually doubles) and use 60%or85% VG juices...this is with LR 1.7ohm cartos and never get "burnt" hits...you shouldn't either if A)your carto is properly filled(#1offender) or B)you are "hot boxing" your PV or C)you are continuously chain vaping without giving time for the juice to wick to the carto'c coil...pulsing your button while taking a hit is OK, I used to do that when I first started vaping until my system adjusted to he fact I was taking something "new" into it...now I smoke it like a hookah and really enjoy the experience....

I was worried about the upfront expense at first because ya just don't know if you are going to take to it or not...you can also turn vaping into a hobby which can become very expensive...we were spending near 500bux/mos smoking(3 of us) and spent that much on PV/gear/juice in the first two weeks(fingers crossed it was gonna work)...we are now spending less than 100bux/mos and smiling at all those savings...made for a really nice Christmas this year!!!!!
