Updating is super easy now with the latest software tool. Whole process of updating my black X Cube II was about 20 seconds once I'd downloaded the tool from smok's site.

I have read people have had issues with the new tool

No issues here, but I did what I always do when doing a firmware flash on something, I run it three times in a row. Flashing is only a few seconds each time.

• Download the firmware tool.
• Unzip it.
• Run it. "Check New Version" for updates, it'll pull down the latest (1.092 at present) very quickly. Leave it open.
• Remove batteries from X Cube, plug in USB cable, let Windows install the device drivers (automatic).
• Squeeze firing bar and hold it, then click "Connect" on the software.
• Click "Do Upgrade" and let it do its thing.
• Click "Do Upgrade" and let it do its thing.
• Click "Do Upgrade" and let it do its thing.
• Release firing bar, unplug X Cube, insert batteries. Watch screen to confirm the version number.
• Click firing bar 5 times.
• Vape.

EDIT: If you did the "Firmware Upgraduation" for titanium or stainless TC via the SmokBEC app before you flashed, you'll have to go back to the app and enable it again after you flash. You don't have to pay for it again, just have to click the mode(s) you already paid for.

I can't find it, but I thought it was mentioned someplace that they purposely sent them out as samples to help the winners avoid import tax or something like that? I hope I didn't imagine that, but it's entirely possible!
