What makes them think we haven't tried cold turkey, patch, gum, etc? Once I stayed away from smoking using the patch for 3 years. One day I had a new job and had to drive from the High Desert in California to dowtown L.A. in downpour rain to attend an orientation session at 8 am. After my appointment, I drove back home during rush hour still raining cats and dogs. My youngest son was 5 years old and I had to pick him up from the baby sitter before 6pm. Before I even go there, I promised myself I would stop at the liquor store and buy a pack of cigarettes and smoke the whole pack if I needed to and I chain smoked half a pack when I got home. That was 19 years ago.

Another time I had to quit cold turkey because I just plain didn't have the money to buy cigarettes. That lasted 6 months.

I wish I had known about electronic cigarettes then, but better late than never. If someone gives you grief again, just look at them and say, Well, (name), I didn't know you cared so much about me! Thank you for your concern. And then choose another spot to vape away.

what I mean by that comment is I find myself saying the same things ex smokers say
wow, my sense of smell is back
I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke
I want everyone to know how great I feeel since quitting
my teeth are whiter

doesn't that sound a little familiar?

Yep, it sounds like an ex-smoker. Which you and I are.

It's like getting rid of a kidney stone, in some ways. One makes comments like, "Wow, it's nice to not be in rolling, agonizing pain." It doesn't mean anything except that I'm commenting on how I'm feeling.

I don't randomly approach smokers waving my vape, nor cough suggestively when near them. It's none of my business what they choose to do or not do, although some approach me and ask about the vape. That's fine.

Someone recently told me that there was a smug person telling a smoker how much money they would be saving if they didn't smoke. The smug person calculated the money saved would've equaled a Ferrari. The smoker replied "Fine. Where is your Ferrari?"

Loved that. The point is... We are all adults, we use our money on things we want to use it on, and no one is in the position to judge anyone else on their choices. Live and let live.

I don't get these guys either. I see nicotine on the same level if not less than caffeine and I enjoy vaping too much to give me an incentive to quit. I think they're hating cause we get to keep and eat our cake too.

No doubt, I love it, all gain no pain.

Most ex-smokers I've met have been pretty cool, but every now and then I get one that just comes across with that attitude of, "I'm so much better than you because I quit cold turkey." Once I realize that's how they want to act, I give it right back to them:

Ex-smoker (with that overly smug attitude): "Why don't you just quit cold turkey? I did it."

Me: "I don't want to come across as a jerk like you while I'm doing it."

I did think this thread would be about something else, but is okay as it is.

I quit smoking cold turkey for 9 years and then went back. To me, that is quitting. To another that might read as I struggled hard for 9 years and caved in. My response to that - not even close to accurate.

I currently vape and while it has been about 3 days since I last smoked, I'm not currently looking to never smoke again. I have about a half a pack and might have one today, might not, I dunno. But do know that smoking in moderation (while vaping) is really cool / kinda nice / enjoyable. Btw, I've been vaping and smoking for about a year now.

Ex-smoking vapers routinely come off as smug on smoking, to me. Not all of them, but majority do.

When I was ex-smoker for 9 years, I'm sure there were times I came off as smug on smoking. For most part, I don't think I did, and glad I didn't. I moved into a house (me as sole owner) when I was non-smoker and specifically had a room for smokers. I was never the type to be on a smoker about their use and how quitting is so much better. If anything, I recall people coming to me and telling me some story about how they are going to quit pretty soon and that they admired my not smoking. I told them I'd be glad to help in whatever way I could, but that smoking is okay in my book and to continue with it as long as they felt it okay for them.

Couldn't decide if this comment I'm making is better served as own thread or as a post in another thread, so I decided on the latter.

To me, the FDA is not our biggest concern. IMO, it is ex-vapers (ex-nic addicts). If that group is anything like ex-smokers, we're going to have a whole bunch of people running around putting vaping down, AND speaking from experience.

That, to me, is when the tide will turn.

My advice to you on parenting is DON'T TEACH YOUR KIDS TO TALK. it's all down hill after that. Just sayin:D
I've always gotten that from Smug Non-Smokers, in addition to the Smug Ex-Smokers. Since becoming a mother, I realized that everyone wants to offer me a bunch of advice on what I need to be doing, as if they're perfect human beings. I just ignore them, or ask them why they're so interested in how I do or don't do things. That usually shuts them up.

At least in my case, it won't happen here. I'm not an ex-vaper quite yet, and won't be for quite some time.

Even so, I can't see myself putting down something that helped me quit smoking. Even if they find it comes with some risks, all indications are they'll be far less awful than smoking.

My response to people like that is to smile and move on. They are baiting an argument because they feel that quitting cold turkey makes them better. I do not care to enter into a discussion with someone who already thinks I am not worthy of their presence. So I just smile, say congrats for going cold turkey and move on. It tends to make them irritated that I don't take the bait and leaves me feeling good for having avoided an argument. :)

My boss is an ex-smoker, lets me vape in the office, generally okay guy.....BUT "smug" is the understatement of the decade! The latest comment was "You know, that thing is like a pacifier." Having already gone through angry and insulted on several occasions, I was rather pleased with my own response: "This is not like a pacifier, it is my pacifier. Leave my binky alone!" I followed this with laughing my .... off. Nothing has been said since...... :D

I like my Vape- and I like my Nic.
I have no intention in quitting either.
I Smoked for 40+ years with everyone ragging on me about it, now I have a very thick skin to others opinions....
and you know what they say about opinions....

Opinions are like Bellybuttons, everyone has one !

Vapping allows me to get the nicotene that my body needs and I want.
End of Story- Don't press it !
