So far, so bad.

(Incoming story time...)

I've been vaping for approx. 24 hours now. My experience has been relatively good with the vaping, and absolutely terrible with the retail side.

So, after asking a friend with a vape and him sucking at responding to my texts, I decided to do my own research. As I'm sure everyone here knows (cause I read that, in multiple places here), all this research is overwhelming. So many types, sizes, flavors, features, TH, etc, etc... I finally settled on going with a basic vape and working my way up. From what I had read online, I could get one for a reasonable price, so me and my partner ventured to the local smoke shop to just dive in. Here in Orlando, Florida, we have a chain of shops called Up In Smoke.

We get there, and despite some bad reviews for the place having stupid sales reps, this guy seemed alright. He ran us through the brands he had, features, battery sizes, his shop's line of oils, and answered all of my questions to our satisfaction. The particular brand I was aiming for, an E-Go CE4, was almost 100 dollars...the item had been repackaged with their store brand packaging and I was obviously immediately turned off of that purchase.

So I asked about vape kits...and he listed off 50, 60, and 70 dollar single vape kits. None of this sounded right. We should have left. We didn't... So then he showed us the Tsunami G-Class 2 pack with a black and chrome battery. No features, no bells and whistles...just vapes. 80 bucks and 2 'free' oils...sounds like a steal, right!? (wink) ...we ask about warranties, and the guy says Tsunami comes with a lifetime warranty. Sounds good, let's just get out of here and start vaping! We choose our oils and go to pay.

This is when I shoulda known I screwed up. He and his coworkers stood around chatting before ringing up the vape, eventually ringing it up, and he stood there silently while I counted my money and responded to a statement made by my partner...I give him the money, he slowly counts it out and puts the twenty dollar bills up to the light, and completes the transaction...and then goes into overdrive with his good salesman routine. He takes everything out of the bag he put it in and is like, 'Oh, let me check all these. I like to test products before I sell them to make sure you don't take home a broken item.' At the time, I thought that was great. He 'showed' us that the items worked, and off we went.

The first few hours were fine. We vaped, it was nice and clean, we coughed a few times because we weren't used to the pure nicotine...lol

Then the issues started. Mine started gurgling, popping, and crackling. It wasn't really affecting anything, and nothing was exploding. We put it off as a 'tomorrow' issue. Bedtime rolls around and my partner goes to put his on the charger...turns out there's a pool of oil hiding between the tank and the battery. Yay! We clean it up, dry it, charge it.

The next day, it takes him hours to get the battery working again, and mine starts volcanoing oil from the mouth piece every other time I push the button. I mean, at least the menthol tastes good.

So, obviously, 4 issues within 24 hours prompts us to want to return the item. We check out the smoke shop's website and don't see a return policy stated. So we call them, and are pretty much cut off with them saying that they don't do refunds, returns, or exchanges, all sales are final, all problems are consumer caused, and our warranty is there for a reason.

Woah, woah, woah... I don't want an exchange, I want a refund and to move to a different product. Two vapes with repeated problems within the first 24 hours...clearly that's a brand problem. Nope, Up In Smoke decided it didn't want to deal with the paperwork regarding their insane markups and to do return and defect paperwork themselves.

So I call Tsunami... No refunds, I pay shipping, I'll get a new product shipped back *eventually*...

Arg!

In all the research and junk I did on vapes, not a single time did anyone mention to be wary of physical store policies!

I guess I'm happy that we didn't burn all our smokes and dance naked around the bonfire of freedom when we bought the vapes, so we have something to fall back on while we wait for the new Tsunamis... But at the same time, I'm really considering taking the new ones they send us and just selling it on eBay instead of using it...

With all of that said, I have a few questions...

What was your first vape, what was your experience with purchasing it, and where did you go from there?

What is your favorite online or physical store(s) to buy vapes and vape accessories, and why?

And lastly, just for fun, if you could build/buy the perfect vape, what would it be/what parts would you use? (excluding 3D printer stuff cause thems cheaters)

Hello and Welcome!

Sorry to hear that you got ripped off. It's too bad that you didn't find this site before your purchase. Lots of good folks here with good advice.

There is no such thing as the perfect...well anything.

A good starter system is the Innokin iTaste MVP 2 with a good clearomizer like a Kanger Protank 2 or the Protank 2 mini. The MVP 2 is around $40 and the Protank 2 mini is under $10.

I second the MVP2 with the protank or aerotank. I'm so sorry you got taken advantage of. Unfortunately, there are a lot of those kinds out there ready to rip off anyone. They certainly aren't trying to help anyone to get the best they can get for their budget. The markup on that junk was atrocious. There are some good ones out there. You just have to do your research. For online, there are many, many good ones. Look at CravingVapor, MyVaporStore (which is in Florida), actually, get your 5 posts in and go to the ECF vendors page and look at all of them. So many great ones. My first vape was an ego starter kit that I did purchase from MyVaporStore. The experience was excellent and their service was very fast! Those Egos got me off of cigarettes completely. You ask about favorite online or physical stores, well I've only been to two physical stores and wasn't impressed. I'm out in the country and there just aren't any around here. My favorite online store is where I happen to buy my present and permanent vape, reosmods. As far as my perfect vape, I believe I already have it. I haven't hunted for anything better since I got my Reos, because, in my opinion, there isn't anything else.

1.What was your first vape, what was your experience with purchasing it, and where did you go from there?

Provari mini with carto tanks and kanger clearomizers. Worked out well. Now, an aspire nautilus with BVC coils would be the best equivalent topper. Now, I have a cloupor DNA 30 and a Svoemesto Kayfun lite plus v2. Also, a mech mod I loaned out. Occassionally, I use my Magma RDA for fun.

2.What is your favorite online or physical store(s) to buy vapes and vape accessories, and why?

RTD vapors for my XTAR VP1 charger. I think it is VP2 now. All batteries are authentic there. I bought 4 AW 18350s there over a year ago still work well. Waiting for them to get more Sony VTC5 batteries in to order.

Had good experience with 101 Vapes. Fast shipping.

3.And lastly, just for fun, if you could build/buy the perfect vape, what would it be/what parts would you use? (excluding 3D printer stuff cause thems cheaters)

Just ordered it. A Vapor Shark RDNA and a Erlkonigin tank.

Already have multiple pairs of mini pliers, mini screwdrivers, koh gen doh cotton, owner super cutter scissors,28 gauge kanthal, ohm meter, etc.

Additional thoughts: I usually just use brick and mortars to taste juice, and buy some ejuice when I get low.

If you aren't building coils, I second the nautilus mini. All my devices are rebuildable but with that said I was going on a trip soon to boston and didn't want to deal with building. I bought a nautilus mini with the bvc coils and I will tell you it's better than the regular nautilus, or any protanks I own hands down. It's the closest I have seen in flavor and vape to any buildable I own and most of my buildables are either reos or kayfun.

knirps, welcome to the site and sorry to hear that you had issues going to a B&M.

The MVP2 has already been mentioned, my wife owns one and loves it and I like it when I steal it from her. It produces and real nice vape and we use the PT2 with the AFC which makes the tank so much better.

There is a reason three people have suggested this PV, it just works well with very little problems. Strat out spending less, do the research here and then buy a ton more shiny things.

I carry an Evod vv 1600 Mah is a backup and to places I just don't want to bring my nice PV. Solid, inexpensive and I can beat them up without feeling bad.

Good luck on your quest! You've found the right place do your research.

I know it's not a good start, but hang in there, it will be worth it once you learn more about vaping and the different hardware. It's a steep learning curve at first and some get frustrated and go back to cigs. I started with an Innokin VV and then an Innokin MVP and now an Innokin 134. I still have and use all three so I recommend Innokin for the chargeable part. (I also just got into mechanicals but that it more advanced.) For the tank that holds the ejuice, I recommend the Kanger Aerotank or the Nautilus Aspire mini - they won't leak. The Nautilus works great with the new BVD coils they make, and is great for beginners. I usually buy off Ebay and get good prices. Good luck on your continuing journey!

Edit: If you buy off Ebay, use vendors with good feedback that sell genuine products to avoid problems.

Sorry you had such a bad experience trying to purchase a good piece of vapeware. All the vendors I use have some sort of warranty/exchange system and I don't go to the local B&M's because of their mark-up. I have purchased lanyards that I've not found elsewhere though.

What was your first vape, what was your experience with purchasing it, and where did you go from there? I started out with the V2 cig-a-likes and soon went on to the 1000mAh Joytech Ego's. I continued on and got the iTaste 3vv, MVP2, Vision Spinners 1300 & 1600mAh, eGo Pass-throughs, VTR, Provari 2.5, Vamo2, Grabber, and now own 4 mechs.

What is your favorite online or physical store(s) to buy vapes and vape accessories, and why? VapingMe cuz' they have great customer service and will replace a bad item. MadVapes cuz' they carry mods at decent prices. Complete Vapes cuz' they have great prices. EcigExpress cuz' they supply me with my pg/vg at a good price. Vapor World, Vapor Products Inc., and many others that have provided great prices and customer support. Most if not all can be found here on ECF as reputable vendors.

And lastly, just for fun, if you could build/buy the perfect vape, what would it be/what parts would you use? (excluding 3D printer stuff cause thems cheaters) I don't know if I need to find a more suitable vape or parts than the one's I already have. I have all versions of the Kayfun and they are on my mechs as well as the Provari. I'm not into sub-ohming so my set-ups are easy to use on anything I have.

My first was an iTaste vv V3 which I still use daily when I'm out and about at work and the like. My brother had a similar experience as you, most vape shops around me only want money and barely know ..... about vaping. He got suckered into paying $100 for an eGo style battery with a few clearos included. The thing sucks and lasts for about 100 drags before it has to be recharged.

That really sounds like an awful experience. I am new to vaping myself. My first experience was with a Mark Ten which really sucked. It just didn't give me what I needed. That said it wasn't near as bad as yours. I am currently using the Vuse. Though even though I don't think it is bad, your better off getting an iTaste or one of these others people on here are recommending. I know the learning curve is high and am still learning myself. I am going to be visiting a smoke shop here at the end of the month though. I won't have any money but I do plan on at least checking out things while I am there. It has a good reputation too. I hope your next experience is much better and your able to kick analogs for good. I for one am glad to be working on doing that myself.

Sorry to hear about the bad experience man. Anyways I've had two friends that I recently converted from smoking to vaping. They asked me what is the best bang for the buck for a starter. I told them to go with a mvp 2 and a carto tank from ibtanked. Both are very satisfied and happy that they didn't waste money on egos and other clearos. You can get a mvp 2 for under $40 bucks and an ibtanked setup for like $30 I believe. Or try some of the new aspire bvc tanks. I hear good things about them. Anyways hope you find something that works for you. Nothing like spending hard earned money on things that don't work.

Oh forgot about your other questions.

My first buy: A 1000 mah ego c and an aspire bdc tank. I had some happy times with that setup. After searching around for a better tank, I came across some of baditude's reviews on ibtanked. Bought one and never looked back. Absolutely love carto tanks.

Good place to buy: Hmmm...I order all my juice from Ahlusion. Bought my mvp from 101vape I believe. I still order cartomizers from ibtanked, smoktek, and ikenvape (when they are in stock). Kidney Puncher seems like a good place with lots of selections. Haven't ordered from them yet though. Madvapes seems legit as well. The majority of ordering I do now is for batteries, rebuildable supplies, and juices. RTD vapor is excellent when it comes to batteries. I order kanthal from temco and have tons of organic cotton stocked up for wicking. Amazon has lots of stuff too.

Ideal setup: Well I've pretty much converted to RDA's and mechs. Still use my mvp and carto tank for work and when I'm driving. My mech and dripper are for at home use. I would have to say at this point if I could have my choice of any authentic mech it would be the stingray x. Already have an authentic TOBH and I absolutely love it. I would also like to pick up a regulated high wattage device at some point like the vapor shark rdna or the ipv2.

Oh one last thing...it sounds like you went to a head shop. Many of the ones in my area cary vaping supplies but I would never purchase from them. Find an actual vaping specific store to check out. Way more experienced staff and larger product selection.

Jeez Man! you really got rung through the ringer!
Some of the others are just as shocking as well.
MY very first was years ago with the analog (tobacco cigarette) look-alikes not a pleasant experience in the long run. More recently I bought an EVOD2 kit for my wife and I to share (purchased from texasselectvapor.com). Before the night was through I saw a glowing review on the Aspire Nautilus, did a little more digging (good reviews) and ordered two of them for a little over $15 bucks each and a couple of Ijoy VV (variable voltage) 1300mah batteries, as well as a couple of juices from Myfreedomsmokes.com. I have been very happy with both orders, and have now dove head first into this activity. While I have more failures than successes with DIY juice, I am confident that a good blend is waiting patiently for me. After lurking on here for a few days and reading more than I should, I finally joined the forum.

With future purchases I will likely get a dripping atty or three to speed up my DIY sampling a bit. I did purchse both the VAMO and the Smok SID so that I could vape all day at work and not concern myself with a dead battery. I can back both products, but I think I like the VAMO a little bit better with its adjustable voltage and wattage, vs just adjustable voltage. Both of them double as ohm meters for my coil rebuilds, which was important to me, because I like to tinker with stuff. My hobby is collecting hobbies, it seems.

It seems to me that when you get into the dripping attys, things become simple and straightforward (time will tell). It isn't rocket science (but mixing good flavors might be).

Don't give up on the Vaping. Once you have a decent setup you will be glad you kicked the stinkies to the curb. I am on day three of 0 smokes, and I didn't kill anyone! Right? I know! I didn't think it was possible either!
