So when did we start calling 'em personal vaporizers?

I noticed that more and more folks on the forum are referring to e-cigs as personal vaporizers . . . and a similar change on the PureSmoker site.

I'm not complaining at all. In fact, that's what I call my e-cig when I'm talking to non-smokers. They seem a lot happier with that as opposed to e-cig. :)

I'm curious, though, is this a specific response to concerns about the FDA and/or customs, or a desire to start distancing ourselves from our tobacco "cousins," or a bit of both?

I like it... kinda. But I've noticed that Smokers tend to lean towards ecig where as non-smokers take to it better if you call it a Vaporizer. Funny how one well placed word can totally change someone's POV.

So true.

I think my only concern about the move towards "personal vaporizer" is whether it will have that immediate gut appeal to smokers. When I first heard about these devices, it was doing a search for smokeless ashtrays. A random link for e-cigs showed up. I was intrigued, I clicked, I researched, and I purchased. :) If "personal vaporizer" had come up, I don't know that it would have sufficiently piqued my interest to click in the first place. Then again, if I saw a link for "personal vaporizer a/k/a "electronic cigarette," maybe I would have.

I do want smokers to be able to find us, although I suspect that we're going to see the largest growth in converts from news articles and word of mouth as opposed to the random searches that accidentally lead smokers to us.

I just posted in another thread responding to the increasing pressure the FDA is putting on our devices in customs. I made the same point about using a term like personal vaporizer or portable vaporizer in favor of terms like e-cig. I think we all need to make a distinction about the personal vaporizer as not strictly a nicotine delivery device but instead refer to it in more general terms along the lines of the 'herbal vaporizer' approach that is used for marketing the type of vaporizers that are for uhh...herb.

I think we also all need to start trying to get the suppliers on board to stop shipping vaporizers with nic carts packed inside the box along with manuals that have language in them that identifies our vaporizers to the FDA as NRT devices due to claims of being a device that can help you stop smoking.

It might be the only chance to prevent our personal vaporizers from being banned by the FDA.

Tribble where are you... we have found you a match! :)

Julie - you are dead on with smokers. They are looking for smoking alternatives, cigarette alternatives, tobacco alternatives, cleaner cigarettes, those types of things. They would not necessarily identify with a vaporizer as historically, vaporizers are used for smoking "other" substances.

What I find very interesting is there are several definitions of the word vaporizer. Almost all refer to them as medicinal accept for one which also includes the use of another substance and that is from the Merriam-Webster Medical Dictionary: "a device for converting water or a medicated liquid into a vapor for inhalation". So while we like to call them that and technically, while there have been attempts to ban vaporizers throughout history that have failed, we still straddle that line.

As far as the unit is concerned, there are other things it can be used for. Even TropicalBob saturated tobacco with PG and used it in his PV/ecig. It is the liquid that it comes down too... so yes... Tribble and Cymri are on the right track. PS: Please don't for one minute think that the suppliers aren't thinking about these types of strategy. We just need some time to think this out because we HAVE to do it right for all of our sakes ;)

i believe that if we call an e-cig, e-cigarette by any other name it may spark up interest for non-smokers. ecigs, i believe, is a smoking alternative for smokers who want to kick the smoking habit yet are still addicted to the act of smoking and nicotine.

e-cigs are a healthier alternative to smoking. calling it a personal vaporizer may make non-smokers say wow...what is that...sounds soothing. i dont think we want to give the impression that vaping is completly heathy when its not. sure there are no nicotine juices available but do we want to start a trend that makes it ok for teens to vape?

e-cig, juice, vaping, dripping...i like the terminology the way it is.

As long as the zero nicotine juice is easily available, I don't see any problem with non-smokers doing this, even teens.

Smoking has been around for ages and in almost every part of the world. I think its human nature to develop something along these lines. At this time, I'm sure that the teens who'd pick it up are the same ones who'd start smoking otherwise. Even if smoking became absolutely eradicated somehow, there's always something. Vaping with zero nicotine seems one of the healthier options. It seems a heck of a lot more pleasant a habit than even chewing gum to me for a number of reasons.

BTW, I can't count how many science fiction stories and books I've read in which some kind of non-harmful smoking style alternatives appear.

i'm just gonna say it's a Vapor Device. if asked what's it for, i'm just going to say that it's for a chronic medical condition, and that it delivers a fine mist of propylene glycol compound directly to my system.

"Ooooohhh.." they'll say "....propylene glycol compound.....(?)" , while nodding in ignorant agreement.

i just won't tell them my medical condition is nicotine addiction.

is there no such thing as privacy anymore?

I understand what you are saying, asidrave, but I am tired of accounting for the non-smoker opinion. My number one concern now is accounting for the FDA viewpoint. If we change the name and stop selling the liquid with the device (and the industry does it soon), I truly believe that the FDA will leave us alone. By the way, it is hard for me to see any non-smoker wanting to do anything (regardless of the name) that involves inhailing anything. It just goes against their nature, I feel. :)

call me old fashioned..........but i prefer to call it an e-cig.

in my eyes, that what they are........an electronic cigarette.......simple

but that is just my personal opinion. im not into all this ... kissing the FDA.......bolloks to em!

changing its name aint gonna make a scrap of difference. you could call an egg a cucumber but at the end of the day.......its still an egg.

the FDA etc are not stupid. do people really think that they will say "oh look, there is a device that acts in exactly the same way as a cigarette and even gives the user a hit of nicotine......lets ban it. oh no wait! its a personal vaporiser........thats perfectly fine then!"

if they are gonna ban them, they are gonna ban them..........full stop. which also begs the question as to why they would not ban the sale of cigarettes when they know for a fact the damage they do to peoples health!

if anything, they will just slap a tax on them.

E-CIG FTW!!
