I've been reading a lot of the success stories lately and thought creating a thread with some of the things that worked for people into a set of basic guidelines in one place would be a good idea. The Info zone is great but the amount of "what do I need" type posts here tells me that far more people fail to look there than do.

Personally I had to do a lot of experimenting before I found a way thats working for me and searching through thousands of posts for tips gets very time consuming. Luckily for me I have a great B&M locally that really helped me out but not everyone has that available to them and unfortunately a lot of smoke shops just want to sell the most expensive set up they can pawn of on a new vaper and provide no advice at all. So here's some of what I have come up with so far and keep in mind that I'm gearing this toward new vapers making the transition from smoking and leaving the "advanced vaping hobby" side out of it.

Choosing a battery set up.
FIrst is look at how much you smoke and that will give you a base to pick your battery set up. The more you smoke the more batts or the bigger batt capacity you will need. IF your having to wait for batts to charge your more likely to pick up an analog while waiting. 1/2 pad smokers can often get away with a single 650 mah batt and have that last all day where a 2pad smoker will drain that batt in a couple hours. ALways have a back up batt for those times you forget to charge or the batt runs out faster (like high stress days). Pick a set up that will be comfortable to use and carry and easy to set up (for some the "cigalikes" will work well). If you don't like how it looks, feels or if you have to fiddle with it a lot your less likely to use it. So a basic guideline for all day vapeability would look like this...

1/2 pad-1pad = a couple of 650-1000 mah batts
1pad-2pad = a couple of 1000-1500 mah batts
2.5 pad and up(chain smokers) = a couple of 1500-2600 batts (regulated 18350/650 mod would be better for new vapers for safer, less hassle vaping)

The Juice
This is the area where most new vapers seem to fail the easiest. Two things are important when choosing a juice to start out with. First is flavor and second is nicotine content. The idea here is to come as close as you can to the hit you get from an analog to help with the cravings and a flavor that makes you want to go back for the vape rather than the cig. Having a good B&M where you can try different flavors really helps here. Also having a few different flavors to rotate between can help, especially during times when your tastebuds are recovering and the vape just tastes flat, dry and flavorless(vapers tongue). Vapers tongue can be helped by having two totally different flavors such as a tobacco and a cherry. Coffee grounds have been used to clear the sense of smell for a host of different things from perfume makers to wine tasting and I found a good strong coffee flavor helped me through bouts of vapers tongue.

Nicotine level is a bit more difficult to choose since nicotine absorption is less from vaping than from analogs and also dependent on what type of cig you smoked. Here's what I've come up with based on personal stories and not on juice makers guides.

Filter cigs
up to 1 pad lights/ultra lights = 6-12 mg/ml (.6-.12%)
2-3pad lights/ultralights = 12-18 mg/ml (.12-.18%)
up to 1 pad full flavors = 12-18 mg/ml
2-3 pad full flavors = 18-24 mg/ml

Unfiltered/"rollies"
up to 1 pad = 18-24 mg/ml
2-3 pad = 24-36 mg/ml

The Topper

There's really no "wrong" way to start here but for a new vaper I think ease of use, reliability and ease of upkeep should be top priority. ANy of the starter grade cartomizers or clearomizers will work out well.

Other Tips

DOn't throw out your analogs right away and rely soley on vaping. There is a learning curve when you start out and some differences from smoking that take some getting used to. Unless you get a cigalike unit the technique is totally different and closer to cigar/pipe smoking than cig smoking. How you transition is just as important as the transition itself and that is different for everyone so there may still be times when only that cig will do. IF all you can do is replace ONE of your daily analogs with vaping for a while then that is still a small success in the right direction.

Don't jump head long into high dollar mods. A good cheap starter kit such as the joyetech e-roll (cig alike) or Kanger EVOD will do just fine until you decide if vaping will work for you and where you want to go with it.

Always ask if you don't know or understand something.

This is by no means intended to be a definitive guide but hopefully bringing more user tips for success together will help more people. I know there is a lot I have not posted so feel free to add your own tips.

I wish this chart would have been around when I started some 3 years ago! My big mistake was nicotine level. I was 1.5 pad and started with 6-8mg nicotine. Took me three months of using both to make the final switch. Good job!

Nice write up! For the topper section I'd add, "be prepared to fiddle a bit". I see many people get discouraged. This topper leaks or gurgles, that one gives dry hits. They all have their quirks and you will eventually have to gain the experience of how to deal with those issues, as none of them are perfect for every single person that uses them. I'd definitely recommend trying a variety of toppers, but don't assume that having an issue with a particular type or brand of topper means that it's junk. You may just need to read up and figure out how to get the best out of it. Of course, some are more fiddly than others, and quality control problems sometimes happen, but many problems can be addressed with some research and experience.

I'd like to add a couple of things, (hope it's OK with Ca Ike)

hydrate hydrate hydrate*, don't give up, hydrate hydrate hydrate, don't force it, like he said don't toss out the cigs immed. I started vaping at Christmas, and have been analog free for 18 or 19 days now, my wife less than that. The most important when in doubt ask about it here. I have learned more and enjoyed all the help everyone here is so willing to give.

*at least 8 glasses of liquid a day.

Good luck and good vaping.

I have found this important too. I drink a lot of water anyway but since vaping I feel the need a lot more!

In my experience, there is a VERY wide range of products and and levels of vaping. I have been vaping for about 4 months now and have used many different devices. Some were great, some terrible, and a few were too good! My advice is if you can, try many different devices and juices, you will find something you really like. Vaping is the only thing that has kept me off of cigarrettes, and I've tried all of the alternative quitting methods. As an added bonus, I now have a new hobby that I love (rebuilding). It's easy to get frustrated with non-satisfying e-cigs, (I did), but keep trying new things, you'll be glad you did.

This I have to disagree with.

A pack of Marlboro "Reds" (For example) contains 26mg of nicotine. For a PAD smoker a 12-18mg juice is NOT going to be strong enough. 12-18mg would be good for someone who smoked "Mediums" or "Lights" but not the full flavor.

A PAD smoker of full flavor filtered cigarettes should be in the 18-24mg range. More than a PAD needs at least 24mg and possibly into the 30+mg range to be satisfied.

this has to be tailored to the individual. i smoked 1 1/2 PAD marlboro reds for 40 yrs. 24 mg was way too strong for me (light headed and almost passing out). i went to a 12 mg and was much happier. i now buy 6mg liquid and mix my own @ 4 mg and am totally satisfied . JMO

True, but I suspect in your case it's not the individual so much as it is the device.

The more vapor you produce the more nicotine you get per puff. Obviously someone using powerful mods that produce big clouds of vapor would want to step down on the nicotine level compared to the more common cigalike or eGo user. My wife smoked about a PAD of Marlboro Light 100s and wasn't satisfied with an 18mg juice and had to step up to 24mg when she used an eGo. As soon as she switched to the SVD with iClear 30s tanks she dropped back down to the 18mg.

I was using 24mg for many months until I got a Kayfun and an Aerotank. I'm down to 18 now and am considering dropping to a 12. I haven't changed as an individual, I still have the same nicotine needs, I'm just using a setup that delivers a LOT more vapor now than what I used in the past.

i was using an ego/ iclear set-up the first few months. probably overdosing cause i liked it so much! now that i build my own set ups i feel i could go 0mg but there is something missing in the taste(for now). as a matter of fact i suppose if i had to i could stop vaping. but where's the fun in that?

These are common starting places that work for people. I smoked camels and 24 was too high for me but 18 worked. I'm now at 12 but it took me 4 months at 18 before I stepped down but 6mg is too low for me yet. You can always add Nic if you need to but harder to accurately cut it down if your juice is too strong. I have a friend I got started on vaping that was a 2 pad pipe tobacco rollie smoker that found 12 mg perfect and pipe tobacco is around 38mg average. Nic level satisfaction is almost as subjective as taste.

Thanks for the additions guys.

The PG is the culprit when it comes to getting dehydrated. When I first started vaping I would wake up with a dry mouth and throat. I know that is one of the side effects from smoking cessation and the PG.

Besides drinking a lot of water during the day I read an article that said until you get over the dry mouth from vaping you should rinse you mouth with some kind of mouthwash at bedtime to break down the PG that has coated your mouth and throat. Worked for me. A month later the dry mouth is gone.
