OK, I'm thinking I'm about ready to pull the trigger and start experimenting with this. The general consensus right now is 400 mesh from the mesh co? I've also found a number of other sites who have similar, but haven't begun comparing prices yet. What about Kanthal - what specification are most people using there? I'm thinking someone mentioned this one. Is that right?

Everything else (mounting, tank, etc.) can wait for a little while, until I've figured out building the coil and wick.

I got my hybrid mini from a forum member and did not have a very hard time of it. I'm just starting to design something similar with SAE measurements. I'm looking to incorporate the genesis with raidy's microprocessor and a touch switch. I have a friend who has a machine shop in his garage....maybe he'll help with some of te fabrication (or at least let me use his tools):)

I was thinking a mix of a bunch of different things for mine though....I like pailpoe's design for the clear tube extending to the vapor chamber too. I was also thinking of modularizing the juice tank so it can be removed more easily for cleaning and changing fluids....possibly making unscrew from the base and atty so the genesis would not have to be redone to clean the tank.

All the talent on this board is really getting me thinking about what I might do to improve/merge the designs into something cool :)

I have been experimenting with both 400 & 325...both perform about the same, though I found that the 325 is much easier to roll and handle without kinking or folding. I've got a lot of experience rolling, used to ryo with analogs. Its pretty much the same motions. As for kanthal, I would suggest both 32 & 34, gives you a lot more play room. I've got both in Kanthal and Nichrome, and both seem to be close in performance. The nichrome is easier to get, but does burn out just a tad easier. Go with the kanthal till you get the hang of oxidizing and then it wont matter.

Hey Peeps, OK, this "Stewalin" issue has been driving me mad for weeks.

From what I can gather, and I'm prepared to be corrected on this, "Stewalin" is just a country specific branding.
I believe the product is made by "Glorex of Switzerland" and can also appear to be packaged as "HobbyTime" and sometimes as "Keramin-S"

GLOREX OF SWITZERLAND - hobby time - m.wanke .

In the UK, I think the same product is called Artelin or Artestone (different spec'd products) and is available here:

Moulding Material & Moulds, Creaform, Artelin, Artestone, Kermolin, Kersolith, Crealin, Crystal Hardener, Casting Moulds (Plus you can get the material spec sheets)

So far I can't find any links for the same or similar products in the USA - but then it's late, and I'm tired now.

I hope my bit of sleuthing helps.

Chumbah, nice finds. One thing though these do seem to be separate products, e.g. Keramin-s has added water repellent as seen here:

Giessmassen Keramin, Stewalin, Stewaform, Alabit

I sure hope you find a good substitute, as this stuff is hard to beat and harder to get.

Been through this thread at least 4 times front to back. I played around with making the Genesis without the machined parts.
Seems like it works well and is what I have been looking for. Most of you that have made one seem happy with the build.

I have the Mesh and NiCh wire. This is my question. Is it worth the effort to find someone who can machine the parts for me? I have called in every favor owed to me and struck out on finding someone who has the lathe.

Being I will most likely only have them make me 2 or 3 sets I assume its going to cost me an arm and leg. Is it worth it?

Thanks,

Well...
They're "permanent" -- you can easily replace mesh and/or kanthal when needed.
They're totally adjustable for the vape you prefer with the juice you prefer.
You're vaping nothing but juice (if you have that concern with other products)
On the other hand...
They're generally large (might be in the advantage list too)
It's probably going to be a one time deal -- You could break or lose the machined parts and they wouldn't be replaceable..
It is possible to have a solder joint fail or lead break requiring more significant maintenance/repair.
You could break the tank tube requiring more significant maintenance/repair.

For me, it's well worth $100. I'd go $200 and consider it worth it.
That's factoring in the possibility/probability that something similar or better or different might be commercially available for less in a year or sooner. If you're going to have to pay $500 or $1000 then no.

Has anyone tried laguna clay company for stewalin? They will custom make clay bodies if you request. They also might know where to find it. I have access to high fire porcelain at my ceramics lab pm me if you want to try and work something out. Like send me a mold and i can high fire it and send the mold and the parts back. I could even glaze them pretty colors upon request. I would say I can do crystalline glazes but that requires 4x the work.

ARTELIN is Keramin and that is not Stewalin for sure. If i was to put a bet i would go for ARTESTONE FIGURE CASTING MATERIAL WHITE. The ARTESTONE description is very very close if not the same and it reminds me of Stewalin that i am using. Here is a list of ARTESTONE properties as described and i can confirm from my own experience that Stewalin 'behaves' same way.

- stone-hard
- waterproof material
- the hardened cast items take up no further moisture
- mixing ratio is 4 parts Artestone to 1 part water
- hardens to stone-hard within 30 minutes
- classed as harmless both toxicologically and physiologically
- finished items can be further mechanically processed
- the final hardening is achieved after 1 – 2 hours with further drying out and absorption of the water still contained in the figure

I am not sure of manufacturers but what i know is that description of Artestone can be applied to Stewalin. If Artelin used to be called Keramin (which is made by GLOREX) than maybe Artestone is a substitute of Stewalin made by a different manufacturer for a different market. You should be able to get Stewalin from german ebay and if that is too expensive than try Artestone instead. At least that is what i would if i was going to order casting material again especially that the price of Artestone is reasonable.

I'm still leaning toward a dental plaster. I like the sounds of Merlin's Magic or Excalibur, but the one I just found that sounds like it could be a good Stewalin substitute is Apex RZ 10 or Apex RZ 15. I think it sounds similar because it is mixed with a resin. It is also the hardest plaster I have sen yet, with a rating of 18,500 psi. Lots of info about all three on this page. Also, see the "dental" page on that same website. I would love to find a supplier willing to hand out small samples of this stuff.

EDIT- Oh, the author of this website says that clintsales.com will indeed give out samples with an email request.

Hi all,Just a quick update on the crimp tubes.I've been using the tubes for about 4 days now,and I'm really happy with them.the connection is much better and they are very easy to use.
About once a day I may have to nudge 1 of them up or down but than it's back to perfect.I highly recommend them if you're having difficulties with your connections. Thanks again Weapon for a great find.
