I bought one from ebay, not convinced it does a good job. I soak the cartos in vodka overnight or two, then rinse a lot before running the cleaner 2-3 times. Mine only runs for 3 minutes at a time.
They do seem to be clean but still reek of Nuport/Wowboy Peppermint afterwards, I couldn't use a different flavour in them.

I have a really nice ultrasonic jewelry cleaner that I bought for the sole purpose of cleaning cartos.

It now is only used for my wife's jewelry. I found that it did no better than pretty much any other method people use to clean their cartos. It gets the filler really clean, but it doesn't clean off the built up crud on the actual heating coil. So while it may get out the old flavor really well, it doesn't extend the life of the carto any.

Until somebody comes up with a process or chemical that will eat the crud off the heating coil, without damaging the filler or coil itself, and is also non-toxic, we are never going to get our cartos as good as brand new.

You may (again depending on the liquid) still need to use the cloth on the silver. Ostermanns at one point had a cleaner that did work REALLY well on sterling....I would assume they still carry it or something like it.

Disclaimer: for those reading this and thinking of the cartos....please please don't use jewelry cleaner on your cartos.....as it may end up working well to clean the coil, the residue left behind would most assuredly make you very very ill.

Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners work on the principal of cavitation to clean the hard to reach places in between components in jewelry. It creates a bunch of high frequency waves which cause mini implosions in the cleaning solution, which effectively "scrubs" the entire surface area of whatever you put into it. Because of the vacuums created in the solution, it forms implosions that are hotter than the surface of the sun, but are also so small that doesn't usually cause the entire volume to rise in temperature too significantly.

Ultrasonic jewelry cleaners are extremely useful for cleaning a multitude of household items and since you can buy a pretty good one for around $50, it's definitely worth getting one if you wear any jewelry, watches, eye glasses, knives, etc. A word of caution though, if you use it to clean eye glasses, make sure your lenses are not the photosensitive type. Sunglasses are fine, as are regular glasses. But the type that darken when exposed to sunlight will be harmed by the cavitation.

Given that these are my "go-to" flavours, Nuport for day, Wowboy with Wowboy Peppermint for evening, it's not an issue. I use black for Nuport, gold for the Wowboy mix, so not bothered. Just saying that strong flavours might be an issue for others...

I meant no offense. Given that I'm suffering w/o wow nuport, I only wish I had the problem of not being able to get it out of my cartos! :)

That's ok cryx, I wasn't sure if you were, to use the Aussie vernacular, "having a go". If you are suffering Nuport withdrawal, I quite understand that you are suffering, so I'd forgive almost anything anyway.

oh man i cant do any of this ..i just use blanks with the same flavor and use only same flavor in it till they are worn out and start over .With the sales its not bad at all .

I am thinking this is the sane way to go. Given my problems in getting the things dry after cleaning, and the expense of a food dehydrator, I suspect I'd be ahead if I tossed & replaced after a few refills.
