I recently got a 1300mAh X2 from Smokeless Image. All of their products have worked great so far and the only other issue I've had was sorted out quickly through customer service. I'll be returning this one soon for a replacement, but am just curious as to what might have happened.

I was on a road trip and had the battery in my lap, taking occasional puffs. It was cloudy and cold outside, a strange weather day for mid June. I say this to clarify that it wasn't hot in the car and the battery wasn't in direct sunlight. I noticed the battery was hot when I felt it through my jeans. After picking it up, I realized that the bottom part of the battery, where the mini USB connector sits for charging and passthrough, was extremely hot for some reason. I twisted off the cap that protects this USB connector and immediately smelled something burning.

There were no LEDs to indicate that the battery was stuck in the on position. Pressing the button showed that it was still working properly, though I had no plans to attempt to use it. Just to see if it would help, I clicked the button 5 times to lock it. I was a bit worried about the possibility of it exploding or leaking battery acid, but held it out the window to try to cool it off. It stayed hot, however, and this continued for several hours. As I expected, when it finally cooled off, it would no longer turn on (the charge was dead).

Taking a chance with destroying more equipment, I plugged it into the USB car charger to see what would happen. The LED lit up for a split second, then went out. Re-attempting this, the LED didn't flicker the second time. It is completely dead at this point, and it still smells funny(an acrid chemical smell).

Was something inside the battery making a connection where it shouldn't have? That's the only thing I can think of. I'm not knowledgeable in the area of electronics, though.

On another note, has anyone had to return faulty equipment to SI before? I just put in a ticket, but I'm wondering, is the address to send it to the same that is listed as their headquarters on the website? Is there a form I need to fill out?

I am sorry this happened :( It sounds like short in the electrical...and I am glad to hear it happened in a safe way. This is the first I have heard of this happening with a VOLT. It would seem to be the case as long as it did not get wet...

HOWEVER IF YOU OR ANYONE ELSE HAVE THESE SYMPTOMS IN THE FUTURE PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FIX IT OR PLUG IT IN.

PLEASE SIMPLY DISCARD IT SOMEPLACE SAFE (LIKE A TIN CAN IN THE BACKYARD ETC).

CS will send you out a replacement ASAP once they receive your email no worries. You will not have to return it!

I am sorry this happened :( It sounds like the battery vented...and I am glad to hear it happened in a safe way. All batteries can vent ...cell phone batteries, AA batteries and ecig batteries. This is the first I have heard of this happening with the VOLT. It would seem to be the case as long as it did not get wet...

I thought I was just being overly paranoid about the possibility of it exploding. I'm glad nothing happened and will definitely be more careful in the future!

Our batteries have safety features to avoid serious issues....not fun that you got to prove it :p

I already got a response from SI. They've immediately put in an order for a replacement and said I should just dispose of the old one. As for getting the battery wet, the only way that could have happened was if liquid from the clearomizer got into it. The clearos do flood sometimes, but from what I understand, the liquid shouldn't be able to enter a manual battery that way. So, I don't know what could have happened.

yeah I was talking more about being submerged somehow... I am glad to hear they got it all settled for you. Please just dispose of the battery ;)

Hm!

Was the whole battery hot? Or just the bottom?
If it was the whole battery then you might had a total destruction of the cell, but then again you would have fire or at least higher temperatures. The smell you got was the characteristic smell of burning electronics parts like silicon and capacitors (aaah yes the well known smell).

Most probably your charging/management circuit (which is located on the bottom) shorted up and it consumed all the power of the battery untill it got empty.

Like Imagine said: DO NOT try to plug something in or even try to use a screwdriver. Just discard the battery on a safe place where it cannot damage anything or set fire to anything, if it burns let it burn safely. If it cools down then just send a response to replace it.
If it burns up take a video it would be fun.

The bottom was the only part that got hot. Plugging it in was certainly a stupid move on my part. It was largely motivated by desperation, as I have a long camping trip coming up in two days and the loss of the 1300 is going to make it tough.

The video thing made me laugh. Thanks!

It looks like a pcb fault for sure, lithium batteries do a lot more damage if they are mishandled or shorted.

One thing i noticed on the X2's:
How is the well press fitted caps going to pop out in case of a melt down? I mean on he 65-78mm ones the bottom plug and sensor will pop out easy allowing the battery to expand.
On the X2's there are only 2 small vent holes, are they enough in case of a melt down?

A similar thing just happened to me last night. The USB input turns blue to indicate its charging but it won't turn on at all. All I was doing was sitting at the table lol. Oh well, I plan in shooting si an email about it as I have another mini which won't fire anyhow.

Glad they seem to be taking care of you and that there was no injury though :)

are you sure you simply did not have it in off mode with the 5 click cutoff?
