So, if you smoke a pack a day and cigs are $5/pack where you live, you spend $1,825 a year on cigarettes, not including lighters.

If you bought two vape pens from a convenience store, for $20 each, every 3 months($160/year) and bought liquid at the same store for $10/10ml and vaped 5ml/day($1825/year) that would be $1,985. So, it could be more expensive.

I would hope that the vape pens last longer than 3 months each, and if you're vaping 5ml/day you should probably looking into cheaper sources of liquid. I really wish there were a link to the actual study, to see how they calculated costs.

With my vaping style, I could spend $500 and get a REO, with an atomizer, 4 batteries, a charger, wick, wire, and at least a years worth of premade liquid.

Have you checked prices recently? Just the other day wondered why one vender that used to regularly run 'sales' has not had one on nic in over three months. It is now only $30!
still $50 for 100mg

I am not surprised by this latest "research" as the anti-groups have been systematically going after each and every claim pro-vaping has made trying to "scientifically" disprove them to the general public and the thing of it is it does not matter if it it "true" or not because once the media puts it out there the public will remember two things The American Cancer Society (a well respected american institution)and they said it is more expensive than smoking.

Part of the hobby for me is how to get a first quality vape for the least cost. DIY is the heart of the matter. My cost of ingredients for 7 ml's a day is $30 a year. I try to only buy a mod or rda if I think it could be my new favorite. That's getting to be a high bar.

I did another calculation. If I was starting from scratch but with my current knowledge and went out to buy enouogh nic, atomizers and mods to keep me independent for 10 years I estimate the cost for me would be $500. I would expect to resuppy PG, VG, wick, wire, flavoring and batteries. If you know just a little bit what you're doing vaping is free. That doesn't make things easier for the tax guys because a little bit of tax triggers a lot of avoidance.

This is getting to be like purchasing a car. New,used what brand, the price can be anything depending
on what you buy. Cost of purchase +maintenance and MPG are all in the equation. Then you have dealer
options and factory installed packages and rebates (discount codes).
After we buy a device and take into account the various configurations we will have to come up with
a average MPD (milli liter per day) depending on the option package purchased.

Excellent analogy! Although, for many of us it's not so much the dealer options, but the after market upgrades that add up. Even with all the mods and different atomizers I've tried over the past 4+ years of vaping, I calculate that I've saved about $6,500 over the cost of cigarettes in the same time frame. Maybe a bit less if you count all the starter kits and mods that I've purchased for friends and family members.

Yep I gave away at least $200 of vape gear to get others off of cigs and still saved 60% last year and need to actually buy nothing this year including flavorings, cotton or wire.

I wonder if sales of vape gear will slump this year due to everyone stocking up last year for the vapopoclypse?

Would that be VapersTek "throat hit" nic?

Never tried it. Referring to MFS which was $50 a liter for 100 mg/ml all of last year with frequent sales. Free shipping or $40 or some percent off that made it close to $40. Noticed they had not had a sale recently on nic. (Current one is on replacement coils) Looked and nic is now $30 regular price.

Some report that MFS nic has a 'peppery' taste but I have not noticed. Though have only tried VG base which is not a valid comparison to PG base nic from another vendor. VG kills throat hit for me and presumably peppery taste.

So my comment finally got approved. Good. I hope the researchers read what I shared so they can see that they actually have no idea what they're looking at for this industry as a whole. I thought I would be a good example of one end of the vape cost spectrum and how even within my own personal situation the cost can change depending on what liquid I'm vaping and how I'm vaping. I'll go through ten ml's or more easy in one day with some lower ohm dual coils then maybe 5-6 ml's the next day vaping a higher ohm single coil and then there are days when I chain vape and days that I don't. I wish I had thought to add the usage factor in my comment.

It cost me $300+/month to smoke here in Mass even driving to NH to save $20-25/carton sometimes.
Same for Mrs. M.
That was 3 years ago.
Packs are $2 more here now.

Now my DIY costs me <$15/month including hers.

We use less than a months worth of smoking $$$ for 2 years of vaping consumables inc batteries, juice, coils, wire, KGD

I have a liter of 100mg/ml MFS (MyFreedomSmokes) nic in the freezer, which I bought on sale for $40, and been vaping their nic for almost 2 years. Right now I'm vaping NudeNicotine nic from the sample I got from them, but I like the MFS nic and the ECX (ecigexpress) nic better. I also have a liter of the VapersTek "throat hit" nic (bought on sale for $25) in the freezer, but haven't tried their nic, yet.

That $65 worth of nic in my freezer is enough to supply me for decades.

I got an email today from MFS, announcing another sale on bulk nic. $40/liter. Coupon code: MFS40NIC
Maybe that $30 price you saw was temporary. Never heard about that.

"The researchers found that on average, the price of a pack of combustible tobacco cigarettes was just over half the price of a disposable e-cigarette ($5.00 and $8.50, respectively). They also found that while the liquid nicotine used to refill e-cigarettes can cost a couple of dollars less than a pack of regular cigarettes, the minimum price to purchase a rechargeable e-cigarette to use this liquid nicotine is more than $20. The rechargeable e-cigarettes preferred by most daily e-cigarette users cost even more." - See more at: Cigarettes cheaper than e-cigarettes in 44 of 45 countries studied | Today Topics

Now, there's some great science for you. In a majority of states a pack of cigs costs over $6.60. They can't tell me that a one day supply of e-liquid costs only "a couple of dollars less." And so what if a rechargeable costs $20? It should last at least 6-12 months, or no more than about $0.11 per day. And, as we know, a good rechargeable should last for years.

But, however flawed this "study" is, maybe it's a good thing if it discourages further taxation of e-cigarettes to "equalize" them with combustibles.

The actual study is behind a pay wall, so maybe somebody with access can tell us what methodology they used to come up with such bizarre results.

EDIT: I don't know how they came up with $8.50 for a disposable. Most of them are cheaper than that.

I think they're intending to argue that cigarette taxes need to go a lot higher, based on the conclusions of this "study", not that vaping taxes need to be kept low.
