I looked but cant find if this has been posted before. Would there be a possible option to have an instant message in a window rather than the PM's going into the in box. I personally think it would be a great covenant tool to use.

Chat/IM addons tend to beat on a server rather severely. It's doubtful that ECF would implement something like that due to the traffic this site receives.

There is an external "Live Chat" tab

both users have to be logged in though and then you can create a "sub channel" to talk in

Actually I did build a phpmychat for me and my wife on a small Linux server a while back so I could chat with her while I was at work...but it IS very bandwidth intensive especially with alot of users on it!

Live Chat is IRC. Not an IM function at all which is what the OP is asking for.

Sphinx is vbulletin based...they do have IM modules but
A. They cost money
B. Hard to implement
C. Could possibly open exploits in the forums

Sphinx is a search engine. It's not vBulletin based, although there is a module that allows vBulletin to use Sphinx as it's search engine. Has nothing to do with chat at all.
