In a gesture of magical thinking, I have just set up an annual Supporting Member subscription. That should make everything all better.

Right?

Well, this is depressing. Have I yet again given my heart to something that is about to die?

Never mind. In a gesture of magical thinking, I have just set up an annual Supporting Member subscription. That should make everything all better.

Right?

Don't be sad, bombastinator and I will still be here.

Forums in general are a dying breed. FB, instagram and such are gaining in popularity daily.
Whatever the cause, it's the same in other forums also.
Not necessarily. My company's forum is busier than ever, both in terms of message traffic and new members joining, but that forum is all about a highly specialized product that requires serious information to use, and places like FB and Instagram are not serious sources of information.

Part of the problem with traffic on ECF being down is indeed that:
vaping has gone mainstream
Which means that people no longer need a serious source of information to find an effective vape.

My guess is when state taxes begin to increase the price of e-liquid and vape gear, when the FDA begins to further regulate our industry with more restrictions, and sales of gear made overseas gets stopped by US Customs, we will see a new influx of readers who want to learn how to build their own coils or mix their own liquids and this place will again be the best resource for that information.
Yep.

Don't be sad, bombastinator and I will still be here.
I'm the admin of a forum that is down to at best four active members (but mostly two, including me). I pay to keep the thing going because it would pain me so to let it go. I have visions of being the only one there, at which point I think I'll open multiple accounts and start arguing with myself in earnest.

We had HUGE ripoff/gouging problems between sellers and buyers...the Verification System was created by Members that wanted to continue having a Classified section.
...fyi...j0ker had other forums contact him for help setting theirs up in a similar fashion...
j0ker hasn't been able to be around in forever...also his system permissions had been cut off.

I would like to remove the Verification process and give it a shot to see how people behave these days...maybe something like being a Member for 60 days and 100 (non spammed) posts to have access.
I think most have finally got the idea that ripping someone off and price gouging is a no-no.
Our Classifieds are also a strict Not for Profit - and I thoroughly approve of that - it's to get rid of things you no longer want and give someone else an opportunity to try it that perhaps couldn't afford the retail price.
But...that all takes the Big Cheese to approve and someone to modify the system to set it up.

And - let's not hijack this to a Classified Forum discussion.
Just know that it's something that I would go for :)
I have to respectfully disagree with part of that. I wasnt around when you had the byuer/seller thing set up the way you described if nor did i get to witness the ripoffs and gouging but my experience with human nature, i think if you did that again, i would be the same if not worse. Probably worse. And also, i stated earlier that i didnt feel there was much more for me to learn about vaping here. I dont claim to know all about vaping, didnt mean it to sound that way at all. But i do think i know all i need to know, i being the key word. I can build safely on a mech, i can make my own juice. Im fairly informed on batteries and battery maintenence. Ive come to this point in vaping with much and grateful thanks to this forum and a handful of members (you know who you are;)). I work in customer service and helping other people solve their problems is what i do. I try to give back to the forum when new folks come in but there is a limit, just as in customer service work, to how much help you can actually give. But ill stick around, no plans on quittin the forum, if just to see what happens next and being the self proclaimed resident grouch, bite the heads off the occasional trolls.

It sure doesn’t help not to have access to verify Classifieds. I feel that brings in a lot of people cruising the other forums site myself included.

But the biggest reason I come here everyday is the people. I learned SO MUCH from so many PATIENT (?sp) vapers.

Honestly I don’t know how you answer the same “dumb” questions I asked ie “ can I put any other tank on this battery/mod thing” Lmao.

I was a quick study with the help of so many great people like @stols001 @Letitia @bombastinator re battery safety. I mean, who knew. And so many more.

I do occasionally visit other forums but the maturity level especially in the ECF bashing is a real turn off.

I wish there was an answer- but I don’t see ALOT of new activity on planet of the V, or the South African one even the Australian forum seem somewhat stale. Reddit is mostly about pods. Can’t bother anyways I’m no help.

Maybe it’s me. I’m at 1.5 years and I’ve learned so much maybe I’ve just plateaued for a while.

I’d love to pay it back with noobies but i have a brain injury and meds which makes me foggy and I’m afraid of giving out incorrect info. However, I can say where to get a new stabwood mod lol!’

Been thinking the same.
I agree with just about all the replies. But here's a couple of reasons I believe top the list. Keep in mind, I'm only talking about the decline over the last couple/few years, as I haven't been vaping as long as many here, who've been here just about since vaping started. I did vape with a cigalike early on in 2010, and saw product changes because my son was an active vaper through those years, though.
  • Pods. Maturing market and technology. People aren't sharing how to drill out their Juul to maximize af & flavor. Nobody needs to find replacement o-rings for their Nord. So much of the product is now non-compatible, disposable. Nobody is really modding anything. Basement innovation has slowed to an imperceptible crawl.
  • Abandoned forum. I agree with this one. If I want to participate, I have to look. I don't even get notifications to threads I watch and participate in. The past few months, more frequently, I find threads I was active in and forgot about have many pages of activity, and I had no idea. And looking isn't easy - not a very robust search tool.
  • No classies. I would've loved to participate in that. And @classwife ,I don't doubt you only found a few pending requests. But I'm sure others, like me, never put in a request, knowing it's dead. I'm not sure why ecf feels it needs to even verify anyone - just open it up for caveat vendor/emptor. That alone would most certainly increase participation on the site. I'm thinking eBay & Craigslist get more eyes on them than most other websites out there, so it couldn't hurt to draw in some people interested in buying & selling. And it'd be a service to those of us already here.
It is a shame. This forum helped me so much. The hours I went through hundreds of pages of tobacco flavorings alone are probably a big factor in ensuring I could stay away from smokes. I hope the forum stays around, if for no other reason than to help others avoid smoking, and discussing the latest greatest products.

Reddit Classifieds has a vibrant presence as well

I've been around for a good 7 years, but rarely comment anymore for a variety of reasons. For one thing, the threads seem too similar to dozens of others that I've read over the years. One exception to that, of course, are the threads on new gear. Those are new. But believe it or not, I've basically been vaping the same RTA I discovered and loved since about 2015. Once in awhile I try something new, but fairly quickly go back to my old RTA. I can rebuild it in my sleep. So I find myself less and less interested in new gear beyond getting a new mod every now and then. Basically, I've found what I like and vaping works well for me. I'm not hunting for anything new, have a well stocked vapocalypse kit, and long ago got over shinyitis. All that means I don't come by as often or feel a burning need for an answer to a problem. I rarely have a problem with my equipment and can generally figure it out on my own.

Another thing is that I was really, really turned off at what happened to Roxy. That gave me great pause and still does.

Imma tryin !
I am not alone tho :)

I thought there was an app ?

It is - and it's sad as Forums are such a rich resource for someone trying to not smoke cigarettes.

Something too I have noticed too is that people just don't like the hijacked threads.
People want/need the information they came here looking for - not a bunch of shenanigans.
We all love to have fun and goof off...but it's not right to do so when someone needs help :(

We have some truly wonderful people here.
Sure a lot of us are now 'older' - but don't you think that our experience makes us perfect to help a younger person ? Drop in products...rebuildables...battery safety ?
It's kind of like - you learn how to talk to your children to get them to listen...then you learn how to talk to your grand children...

Tootle puffer or cloud chucker - we are VAPERS !!

Sup ?

WE are what's Sup !

...too dang early in the morning for this much thinking

Classy, I know you work and as for moderating, I wasn't speaking about you. Never had a problem with your moderating, there's a reason we call you Classy!

Most of what I wrote was what I've seen other people complaining about on ECF. I probably will re-up next year but it's fun to vent a little. ;)

Also, I have zero problem with the Sinyitus thread, just saw a couple of people grousing. They seem to have a blast in there and I even peeked in everyday for a bit to make sure a certain turtle survived a health scare. Threads die because people quit posting in them.

Don't know if I'm the only one that noticed a change in ECF after Robin passed, like some of the cheer in the air disappeared.

I miss the old ECF but do like seeing old friends here even if I'm not posting much.

@smacuser, didn't see your post until after I logged out but now that insomnia seems to be winning... :(

I've seen various reasons given from old timers from added work time to other posters dropping out so they did too.

In my case it's medical but I also see a lack of diverse threads. Shinyitis thread wiped out about three other threads dealing with more specific types of vaping, no offense to the shinyitis thread.

Oliver doesn't seem to much care about this site, if at all, any more plus there's almost no engagement from the moderators.

Moderation is a joke these days. Racist, pornographic and hard drug posts are allowed to remain on here even after multiple reports have been made.

After the last software update everything went to hell. How many of your "notifications" are correct?

CASSA, born on ECF, decided ECF wasn't worthy of making posts to anymore. I think they do now but I got very used to ignoring them after their lengthy absence. And considering the ground we're losing, they aren't very effective these days. :(

Vaping has gone mainstream so the "it's-all-about-me" crowd think they know everything. They don't and the video evidence shows up here repeatedly.

There's very few ECF "supporting members" here anymore so now "dry herb" devices are promoted on ECF but you can't talk about them. I humbly vote drug talk can go elsewhere.

The bottom line answer to your question is an almost complete neglect/abandonment of this site, which literally probably saved my life, by its founder. It's heartbreaking. If this site continues to deteriorate at the rate it has, I won't be a supporting member next year.

I feel like I'm watching the death of an old friend. Have you kept up on the farce that's the classified thread? They charge people money and never approve them.

ECF is dying and the person that can save it is AWOL. :(

*sigh*

What she said. And some. Where the heck is Oliver, anyway? He's been MIA for a very long time (one post in January on some contest thread). I saw a thread about another sister site with deals and contests (selling CBD oil, BTW)? What's that all about. First Vaping.com, and now this? Read this! - New ECF Sister Site - Metavaper (can I get your help?) I liked it much better when everything was in one place--advocacy (where are Bill Godshall and CASAA?), e-cig info, DIY section (I miss HeadInClouds so bad), vendors, Classifieds, co-ops, and deals... Who runs this show nowadays, anyway? If the owners don't care, how can a forum like this do well?

And we've lost so many valuable members--makes me wanna cry, really. Some due to attrition, death, and other acts of God. Dear Robin--I miss you so much! But we've also lost great people due to overzealous moderation--I hate to say that, but that's a fact. People I liked and learned a lot from, people who were my friends. Some were banned for whatever reason, others who left in solidarity with the banned ones... Many of them were dedicated, lovely people whose absence will forever be felt here... Yes, I could go to other forums and talk to them over there (I do, sometimes, but I read only)--but I'm not joining any other forums any time soon; ECF is still my home. I've been here since 2009.
