Ok sorry for the oddly worded title but that was my immediate thought upon watching a DIY video.

I've only been vaping for two weeks now but I'm loving it, especially the DIY aspect... pretty much every item in my house has been checked for its possible use as a mod case lol. However, while checking options on cart/cartos, I stumbled on a DIY tank mod.

Now from what I can tell its a bottle, surrounding a carto with two holes punched in it. This is all fine and dandy, but shouldn't that flood the carto? I've not filled a carto myself yet so admittedly I'm mostly speaking with zero knowledge, but it seems like the liquid in the bottle would flow in through the holes, basically making this equal to just filling a carto all the way to the top.

I know I'm wrong since clearly it works, but I'm perplexed as to why. Anyone able to drop some science on me?

Air pressure my friend. It works on air pressure outside the tank vs inside I think. All I know is I have several syringe tanks mods I have made and only 1 flooded and that's cause I punched the hole too big. (my rookie mistake) You can turn these suckers upside down and no leaks. I was lucky enough to learn if you are filling them with the syringe method always better to take a syringe of air out of the tank before refilling.

I don't know the science behind it but the filler material just gets soaked from the holes. My experience is that it does flood on a rare occasion but you just take the tank off the battery and blow it out lightly onto a paper towel - back to normal. Also, some people make the hole bigger or smaller depending on the viscosity of their juice.

I've got several tanks loaded with juice at one time and just switch them depending on my flavor desire at the moment. They work really well IMO. I'ver personally found the best way to make the holes is using the directions found on this post...

I
buy my tanks on the cheap from MVS and cut some of them down for use with boge LR cartos. I know some people spend more on their tanks but so far I haven't found the need to do so. Time will tell.

Yep, it's something about the pressure. If you get an air leak in your tank the juice *will* leak out of the carto. I don't really understand why or how, but it works. I also use syringe tanks and they are awesome. I don't care to fill up cartos several times a day, so the tanks make vaping much more enjoyable for me.

OK, dumb question.......but do you think it's because I am at 5,000 feet that I seem to have more problems with tank leaking than most people?

That would definately have an affect, but these tanks have a learning curve either way. Not a dumb q

I live at 4800 feet elevation and haven't had any problems with my tanks. Using 2 smoktek dcts, chibi, m1a1, and 3 syringe mods. Keep your chin up, everything gets easier with practice.

Well I'm at 4200ft, and have been using tanks almost as long as they have been around. Still have never experienced all this leaking that you guys are talking about.
I started out with slotted cartos, now use punched cartos. Have used big holes and small holes, big slots and small slots with no problem.
What I can do is induce a leak by creating pressure inside the tank. This can be done by filling the tank with a syringe needle, or by removing an end cap to fill it.
When you refill with a needle, where is the air suppose to go? When you push the end cap back into the tank, it compresses the air/fluid in the tank. Both will force juice out the bottom.

Here is the proper way to refill a tank, you can do it from the top of the tank or from the bottom of the tank. The key is that the air in the tank can vent.

I am just learning about tanks myself, been reading and watching videos. I heard that if they do flood, you don't want to blow them out like you would a regular carto, you turn them upside down or something like that. Was reading about kr808 tanks in the vapor4life forum.

If I do get a bit of a leak (usually after a refill), I hold a tissue over the battery end first, to soak up what I can. Then I blow gently on the battery end, just to clear the tube (not hard enough to force juice out of the mouthpiece end). I do find that if I try to blow them out onto a tissue from the mouthpiece end, it can make the leak worse and I end up wasting a lot of juice. JME.

Well, I think I would rather ya'll have told me it was the altitude, so I wouldn't feel like such a klutz.......LOL

All the leaking I'm getting is from air pressure forcing leaking out the battery end. It only happens when I refill. I never get any leaks around the end caps. I have tried all the methods of filling and watched tons of videos showing how to fill tanks with no change in the results, although the M1A1 tank with the fill port is working the best for me, not perfect, but less leaking.

I would love to fill tanks from the bottom but the Lil Mama SS end caps fit too tight to get the carto pushed back into them after filling, and, of course, while I struggle with that, most of the liquid spills. When I fill a tank, I have to leave it sitting over the open bottle to catch all the leaks, so you see it's not just a few drops. It will eventually equalize if I leave it sitting long enough.

The hole in the carto is very small so I don't think it's that. I have punched cartos myself as well as used punched cartos from three different tank vendors with no change in my leaking problems.......

I have tried Chibi, Lil Mama, and now the M1A1 tank.........

Do all cartos in these ranks use filler material as opposed to something like a vertical cone? How many holes or slots are there in the cartomizers and are they on different sides? Reason I ask that is I understand that the vacuumed in the tank prohibits the juice from leaving the tank but if the tiniest air passage opens up I'd assume the juice would flow out pretty good. So if there are holes or slots on opposite sides of the tank wouldn't that create an opening for air to enter the chamber if left laying on its side for much time?
