I found this catalogue - listing a 0.75 second response time probe of 0.5mm diameter: http://www.transcat.com/media/pdf/K_2079.pdf

Interesting! Maybe I misjudged solid probes.

I wonder if I can find this, or something similar in the UK - for not too eye watering prices ;)

Thanks @f1vefour !

Yeah.. you'd think ;)

These places assume everyone is a company who wants it in a huge box, protected with layers of Styrofoam and the soft, clean hair of a virgin. And isn't paying for it personally.

WTF!

That's insane shipping cost.

This is high for local shipping, but much more reasonable.

Quick note(s) on the Kooper 60W:

1. You get what you pay for...

2. Despite the YT'ers saying it is good in the hand. I had to put the disgusting orange colored sleeve to make it comfortable.

3. The 510 is _almost_ "spring loaded". This allows for changing resistance based on how hard the atty is screwed down.

4. Reads resistance correctly only after it finished with its temper tantrum. (Too many areas and places to recount BRIEFLY.)

Is it worth the TIME it will take to tame it? I'll get back to you when I have more of that precious commodity. [emoji19]

Yup :( USPS do tracked shipping to the UK for as little as $10 or so, but these places don't/won't use those cheap services.

@vapealone and I had the same issue dealing with ResistanceWire.com to get Alloy 120 (NiFe70). They quoted something like $100, and when VA got his spools it was in a huge box wrapped in loads of protective packaging.

I spoke to one of their sales guys and although he first said "We can use UPS or Fedex", he did later agree, somewhat grudgingly, that they could probably send it out on a cheaper USPS service.

I suppose I could contact this Novatech place, but on a big site like that I would be surprised if they did special service for a tiny purchase like this. They want everything automated and standard procedures. If I did get the shipping down to $10, that's $46 total which $20 cheaper than the UK but I do have to wait a while longer. And then there's always the chance I have to pay VAT and duty on import.

I think if I get it, I'll do it from the UK. Just can't decide if it's going to be better or not in practice. The response time sounds amazing, and the flexible rod could certainly have advantages. I see in the description that they say this probe rod can be bent, they give the example of bending it around a pipe to measure the temperature of the whole pipe. The 0.13mm wire I use now is so springy it's a real pain keeping it in position touching a coil wrap, so a firmer but still flexible rod could be great.

Hmm, it is tempting!

OK thanks for the update. So what do you mean about the 510? It's meant to be spring loaded but isn't? The pin doesn't move much?

I have two on their way to me :) One has been in UK customs for days, expected it Wednesday but still hasn't cleared. The longest package I've had to wait for from FT so far. The second I ordered a couple of days ago from 3FVape and hasn't shipped yet, also the longest I've had to wait for a package to ship (when everything said it was in stock.)

So I hope it is usable ultimately ;)

The TCR scale is 0.004 - 0.008 right? But it does do Titanium, is that a separate mode? I'm very much hoping they'll eventually do a FW update to take it below 0.004, but even if they don't that at least covers NiFe52 and 70.

It's expensive but being a scientific research site I have to assume the products they carry are of a higher caliber than your standard China affair.

Yeah absolutely. The probes I use at the moment aren't Cheap China, they're hand made in the UK. But they're still cheap - £5 / $8 each on eBay. And although they have great response time, it comes at the cost of low maximum temp - 250°C for most of the probes I have, and 350°C for one other which has a thicker wiring.

This is undoubtedly going to be an overall much higher level of quality, as well as having the much higher maximum temp. And is actually certified etc.

@TheBloke Kooper does Ti, has a TCR from 0.004 - 0.008, but also gives a VERY strange "ohms too high" message...and misreads initial ohms (in Ti and Ni, that 510 thing it does).

I believe it is tameable, I just don't have the time to fiddle right now. As I said, I'll get back to you...or be proved wrong by others' (experienced) opinions.

Wow... I haven't had any resistance measurement issues with the Kooper Mini 60W and I feel it's very comfortable to hold. Definitely different perceptions.

And don't forget @balazsk 's idea to set a 200 profile that will heat the coil to Titanium's ceiling temp (600°C?) for maximum cleaning power.

No dna200 for me unfortunately. Perhaps I'm just waiting too long before I try to clean it. I barely get a week out of a coil before its too gunked to use but then again I use the same one all day everyday and don't switch between mods/rdas like most people do. I'll try the water and toothbrush next time. Going to start looking for a solvent I can just toss the coil in to eat away the gunk quickly and not harm the Ti.
