About all you need is a flashlight, batteries, battery charger, atomizer adapter and you have the stuff needed for a Magnum mod. I would just use the bit of solder that came with the soldering iron. Silver solder requires a very high temperature to properly flow and the iron you bought may not be the best tool for that job. The PC board is likely what you are going to use for mounting the atomizer connection. I recommend using the flashlight lens, since it is properly sized, and securing the lens in the flashlight body with a 7/8" o.d. retaining ring.

Not knowing the specifics of what you have planned, I have to say you did a great job shopping. The only thing I would change is to replace the silver bearing solder with this:

Lead-Free Solder (0.25 Oz.) - RadioShack.com

The silver solder has a place, just not so much with the tiny parts we are working with. It requires much higher heat than our little plastic parts can take and doesn't provide any advantages for this application. Rosin core solder contains a core of flux which is helpful and melts nicely at temperatures that a small wattage iron can achieve. That is the exact soldering kit, push buttons, and shrink wrap tubing that I bought to start out with.

I am excited to see what becomes of this. Please keep us posted.

Thanks, I'll do my best... I'm going over to Harbor Freight tomorrow, along with Home Depot, to get the rest of the needed parts to complete this.. Although the batteries won't be here for another 2 weeks, I can still get started.. My father even told me that if the price was right, he'd buy a drill press for me to use... LOL! Can you believe that???? Just for me to use... Anyway, updates will come as they are being produced..

Anyway... A good modder doesn't really need to be all that tidy... Sheesh.. You should see my dad's work bench!!!

btw. that picture is not a setup, I looked over to my left after reading your title and realized that I need to clean up. :)

opusMorian, how did you sneak in and get that picture of my desk? That is exactly what my desk looked like this morning before I halfheartedly "tidied" it up to save my marriage - divorce court was alluded to if wifey can't get to the computer by the time she comes home from church. I figure I have already stressed her out enough by buying all this stuff and drilling in the living room and soldering on the kitchen counters, I better make this mess liveable quick:oops:.

These posts are very amusing... lol.. I could use some more ideas tho on how to make my mod look a little different than some others on this forum.. So far, mine's going to look like the magnum... I want an original Idea, but from what I've heard it's the easiest to do... :)

-Jim

Using the info Madog gives for wiring, some soldering skills, and a little imagination, the sky is the limit. The whole idea is to make what you want, what you think you might like. I have seen tobacco pipes converted to electronic pipes, rubber duckies turned to rubber PVs, cell phones modded to vape. The only limit is your imagination.

As for difficulty of the mod, I personally found the Magnum much more difficult than the box mods. It was the first one I attempted and almost the last one I completed. Others finished the Magnum on their first attempt. Do what feels right to you - this is, in your words, the BEGINNING of the madness, so there is more to come.;)

Thanks Nico.... My problem is, trying to create something that hasn't already been done. I like the Magnum, the screwdriver, the boxes, the phones and all the rest. I just want something that I can be proud of... lol... I think I'm going to start with the magnum, and build from there... If I can complete the magnum, I can do ANYTHING! :p

That's the right idea. Just get modding. With the confidence of a few mods under your belt, the ideas just flow and the bank account can't keep up with the modding habit.

Looks like a good start. One suggestion would be..Get the little brown switchs at radio shack. I tried the switches you have in your pic. There nice with the threaded part on them but there pretty big.
The switch I ended up using is...radio shack part#275-0003
I used the led holder on the switch also. Pretty clean look. I'd take a pic but my camera is jacked.

Well, I've gone to Harbor Freight today, got a drill press for $70, 2 LED flashlights for $3.00, and a hot glue gun for like $5.00. Then went to Home Depot and got 2 Retaining Rings, which were the most expensive at $.89 a piece. :p So all I need now, is my batteries and charger! WOOT! Almost ready to build this bad boy!
