I have used cotton balls as an overwick. My experience is, they work great when the main wick is new but then the flavor and vapor falls off a cliff after a day or so. I have tried replacing the cotton overwick but it doesn't restore its performance unless the main wick is changed too.

I learned of this method from BJ43.
These are pictures from BJ43 from the Vivi Nova Rebuild thread.

Not to be a smart-........(buuuut ;))

The textile people have done that for you. They take cotton balls, weave them into cotton thread/twine. So why not just use that? I'm using butcher's twine. It said 100% cotton. It looks unbleached and not dyed. IDK if there's other concerns. I boiled it 1st.

Still thinking about best use of metal wicks.....cotton has an aftertaste as it's broken in. So something must still burn a bit.

Is this a response to my cotton ball overwick? Are you asking why I don't just make the whole wick from cotton balls?

I guess I could but honestly, I have enough to worry about with winding coils. Having to thread, twine, braid or whatever I would have to do to make a wick from cotton balls would only be adding salt to the wound. :p

I don't understand using bamboo. Doesn't make sense to me.

I'm thinking about carbon steel or stainless steel wick/mesh now.......

Carbon steel would have a nice carbon coat buildup on the outside for insulation...carbon atoms bond to it (like when you season a carbon steel wok). BUT...I think it rusts.

With cotton batting/cotton balls I do pull/twist to make wicks. You can make a wick as thick or thin as you want or need. You end up with a very 'loose' wick which I believe wicks much better than a thread. Plus no boiling needed with the CVS "Rolled Cotton" batting, it's listed as sterile and USP.

Most use stainless steel mesh (400 mesh size) for wicks. Currently in a SmokTech rebuildable tank I have a short SS mesh wick coiled horizontally in the air chamber with rolled cotton wicks hanging off the ends and going into the tank.

Well, you're more "Mr. Chemical" than me Catt. I was just concerned; the thought process is:

Cotton is mostly pure cellulose. Bamboo...IDK. Sure it has a lot of cellulose, but "other" stuff too. Cig filters are "celluose acetate". They are made from cellulose extracted from wood, but it's a process...not just the raw wood.

It may turn out the other way around...that bamboo is better than cotton...for example. But who the heck knows. I don't see a reason to inhale bunt bamboo. OTHO...I'm not sure I want to inhale burnt cotton or silica shards either. So I'm thinking about SS mesh.

Use 500 if you want SS mesh
