The risk is when somebody inexperienced or just ignorant of safety makes mistakes. These are high powered batteries and we are draining them with hand build coils to create heat. Obviously if you're not careful and don't understand what you're doing mistakes are going to happen. For the post part your safety is up to your practices. There are exceptions like the ipv 4, so you've got to research your equipment.

Seriously... try not to worry.

99% of the time, exploding e-cigs are down to user error or messing about with hardware.

Using the correct charger and keeping an eye on it (NEVER leave it overnight of something) should minimize any risk.
