The worst offender in my experience is Canada Post, who once billed me $25 for the privilege of having them pay 83 cents of provincial sales tax on my behalf...

^That was hilarious

I didn't mean to offend. You got that, right?

Absolutely. As I said: in retrospect? The sheer staggering pettiness of it is hilarious. In the moment, however, when the postie is knocking on your door, smirking smugly, and holding your package hostage unless you fork over the 83 cents plus $25 handling fee...:)

And I've always had excellent luck shipping internationally with DHL - never had a package go missing or take two months to arrive, and very rarely had to pay tax or duty (or, when I lived in Mexico, bribes).

Argh, never knew that angle!

Don't know if it's still true, but when I lived in Mexico in the late 90s pretty much any international UPS or FedEx parcel that went through Guadalajara airport freight terminal got "held for further processing and examination" until you sweetened the Customs guys - a co-worker of mine thought he'd be smart and UPS himself all his personal effects so he just had to carry a weekend bag on his flight down. As I recall he ended up out of pocket north of USD500 in bribes, plus the cost of four or five trips to Guadalajara, which was a couple of hours away, in the process of getting his CD collection and dirty underwear out of hock.

I, meanwhile, imported all kinds of stuff (including some for resale, albeit at my cost - texts for some of my students) via DHL and never paid a penny in duty, taxes, or little bites. My assumption at the time was that DHL had the head of Aduana in Guadalajara on the payroll.

 least in Mexico, they call it what it is, bribes:D bribes, tariffs, handling fees, import tax, all da same ting.

Meanwhile, Erly has been processed through Germany, so I'm kind of having another Sound of Music Moment

Wow guys...reading this import tax stuff is crazy. I've had the import tax on stuff from China, but never anywhere else that I can remember, and it was like $17 for a $500 package? Something like that. Can't remember the courier.

Comes down to what is in the package, where the package is coming from, where it's going to, and where it's being inspected. Plus harder to plan factors like "did the Customs agent get lucky last night?" and "was the supervisor at the international freight terminal late for work and so didn't have time to grab a cup of coffee."

It's a real maze sometimes. Frex, while tracking my erlkönigin on its way from Austria to Canada I learned that a) Cincinnati is a major air freight hub and b) US Customs in Cincinnati inspects all commercial shipments going through there looking for counterfeit merchandise, even if it's only being trans-shipped through the US on its way to somewhere else. Apparently the Cincinnati branch of US Customs is known and feared by the folks who make a living ordering crates of Mike sneakers, Lewis jeans and Frada handbags from Chinese sweatshops for resale on eBay. Who knew?

I got a bill from DHL for about 15 bucks the other day, so they are not immune, at least in the US.

On another note, as I mentioned in an earlier post, I destroyed my positive pole spacer by over tightening. I contacted the manufacturer via facebook and admitted that I was a dummy and asked them if they could help. They gave me the specifications for the spacer AND asked for my order number. This was early last week. Yesterday I had a letter in the mail from them with a few extra spacers. Wow, that was really above and beyond on their part, so kudos!
