Here's what I got so far:

Everything all laid out.

symyna5u.jpg

You'll see 2 long legs.

bybe3ere.jpg

Feed both legs thru the center hole

I took the shorter lead and pulled it tight to maintain tension and lightly wrapped it around the bit.

yzuseqyp.jpg

egyhu3yv.jpg

Take the other lead and put it thru the grommet.

sebahyhe.jpg

Then I pull for tension and lightly wrap on the other side of the bit. Then I slide the metal post in.

zy4atava.jpg

Trim the leads either with a cuticle trimmer or from pull and twist method (haven't mastered this method).

Put the base in the pt2 mini and test.

ne7abu7u.jpg

Will do some dry fires to push the coil together with tweezers as needed. Then pull some cotton thru, drip a little on the cotton and attach chimney and fill tank.

Pretty basic run down.

Nicely done! You ought to blog that post for reference.

Ok, somehow I did manage to get the rubber thing back in.

Umm..I thought if you touched the wire with anything metal it would short?

I did somehow manage to get 11 wraps around a 5/64 bit, but it's much too wide to fit in that tiny chunk of metal. Might have to go down to 8 or 9 wraps, but I have no idea what kind of resistance that would yield.

My mind is also quite boggled at the idea of somehow getting a piece of yarn thru such a tiny space as the interior of that coil.

Andria

PS: How does your coil stay tight like that? Mine spreads out the minute I let go of it. I really wish I did have a vise, so I could let it stay like that overnight.

Fire the button and while the coil is hot, squeeze. If you touch while firing, it will cause a short.

A great tip for getting a piece of yarn is to take a tiny bit of plastic wrap and make a point with it and pull it through that way.

To get a tight coil, a pin vise or small screw driver with some tape to tape down one side of the wire allows you to roll a fairly tight coil. Even without a pin vise or screwdriver, it can be done with practice. My first couple attempts were with only a drill bit and I didn't have a torch either, so I would press the fire button then pinch with tweezers. Heat, repeat. It was pretty effective, but take some practice.

If you'd like, I can wrap a few and mail them to you. I need the added practice and it could last you a couple weeks until you look into a pin vise or something.

The pin and the base are the two metal parts of the assembly that can and must be touched by they ends of the coil. They make the connection to the battery. But it's VERY important that the ONLY places the coil wires touch are those two parts - and only one each, or you will have a short.

IIRC, that was AWG30? If so, a 9/8 wrap should give you about 2.4 Ω. That should fit in the base if you get it pretty tight.

Try pre-heating the kanthal before winding. It anneals the metal and helps it to hold its shape. While it's nice to have one of the pressurized torches (can be spendy) or lighters (relatively cheap), you can use a regular butane lighter and just keep it hot a bit longer. Hold it with tweezers, pliers, hemostat...

If you keep your cotton long, just moisten one end and twirl it out to a point. Threads pretty easy then, and you're going to be cutting to fit anyway.

Don't expect keeping it wound overnight would do much... maybe some. But it really needs the heat to hold it's shape.

I showed all this (my fumbling efforts with the coil thus far) to my husband when he got back from the hospital -- they did admit my stepdad, mainly because they can't figure out what's wrong with him to cause all this pain. Anyway my husband asked me if it wasn't worth it to just buy replacement coils, to save me all this frustration. I told him that the best US price I can find is $5.96/5-pk, at Discount Vapers. They're a bit cheaper from FT, but not as cheap as I thought they'd be, and of course, there's the wait. And actually, being able to dry-burn the coils and change the flavor wick does make them last a lot longer. I'm not out of coils or anything, I still have two in the pkg; I think I'm just piqued about this, everybody being able to do something I can't -- that's why I learned to swim, roller-skate, and ride a bike! :D And smoke cigarettes, dammitall. :D

I did try the lighter, but maybe not as long as it needs, it didn't really seem to do a lot. I think I need to get one of those dealies from Harbor Freight, lighted magnifying glass with a thing to hold what you're working on, so both hands are free. The old man's been looking for that in the sale papers he gets from HF, but hasn't seen them on sale. So you just pinch it together with tweezers or needle-nose while you apply the fire?

David, I have some silica wick that should be here tomorrow, though I'll probably be at my mom's all day. I was thinking I'd keep using silica in the coil, so I can keep dry-burning it the way I have been, and just use cotton for the flavor wick. Was talking to edyle about that in the cotton wick thread earlier, and I'm thinking that maybe the 4-stranded P&C is a bit too thick, which is why I keep having the dry-hit problem with it. I may try pulling out one of the 4 strands and see if that will still help with the leak problem, but also with the dry-hit problem.

But no more coil crap tonight; I have to get up much earlier tomorrow than my customary noonish, because of this thing with my folks, so I'll have to hit the hay PDQ.

Thx y'all!

On my bottom coils I often use silica when recoiling, for that same reason. Lazy :) Although on my Kayfun style I use cotton only, but it's a lot easier to thread new cotton since the coil isn't down in a cup.

Conversely, there's no huge need to recoil at all. At about $6/5, that's about $1.20 each. With a good cleaning and dry burn routine, they do last a long time, and that skein of P&C is going to make a LOT of flavor wick! It really comes down to how much of a hobby you want to make vaping, how self-reliant you want to be about it, and how much effort you want to put into customizing your vape experience.

By all means, try different amounts of flavor wick. I'm beginning to think that the same ratio from different vendors has different viscosities, so brand X 70/30 might be thicker or thinner than brand Y of the same mix. Just keep in mind that too much will choke off the flow and too little will probably cause leaks.

Yes, gently squeeze the coil together with the tweezers, torch (heat) to red hot, let cool. Maybe repeat a time or two. Part of the heating it to anneal the wire, part is to burn off any residual manufacturing crud.

Andria, see post# 2693. I responded about the tweezers and everything right after my response to David saying blogged.

David is absolutely right, it all depends on how much of a hobby you want to make this.

I've let it become a very big hobby. Not so much for cost savings, as I'm definitely not seeing any savings at this point, but entirely to customize my vaping experience.

The stock Kanger coils were my least favorite vape of the devices I tried until I rebuilt with a micro coil and cotton wick. I never tried just replacing the flavor wick, I just jumped right in.

For me it has become a big hobby and really keeps me distracted from analogs and truly keeps me excited about vaping... so much so that I've been able to cut the nic content down to 6mg... soon to try 0 to see if I can completely remove nicotine from my life.

Ok... I'll keep playing around with this one coil, see if I get any better at this. I really would like to be more self-sufficient, able to maintain these things myself, but it's nice to know that my husband has no problem with just getting replacement coils, at least until such time as I'm really good at this. It kinda scares me, the way the dry-burning did till I had done it a half-dozen times, but this seems even scarier, with the potential of a short frying one of my iTastes, or even giving *me* a shocking wake-up call, if get careless. That part, the poking at it with metal while it's attached to the battery... that scares the bejeebers out of me; I'm wondering if I can get some tweezers with rubber grips! And I'd also like to have a couple more PVs around before I do anything that has the potential of frying one of the two I currently have. :D

As far as I know right now, I'll be spending the day with my mom, so I'm just glad I have 2 coils still in the pkg; the ones I'm using currently seem to be fine, but you just never know with these things, when they'll decide to just start tasting burnt. Also got a couple of cartos filled, for the drive up there -- I've found that using a carto while driving is a better idea than a tank, no priming hits necessary, no worries about spills, etc. Those T3S's are so prone to drips from the mouthpiece if the thing isn't kept upright. While I'm driving, I prefer to keep my mind on the road, than on whatever my PV is up to. :D

Here's hoping everything goes smoothly with your folks!

I know they make ceramic tipped tweezers which would allow you to fire and squeeze at the same time... But they are costly and not very durable.

Andria,
PM me your address, you are stressing too much. I have some pre-made coils I got from FastTech that I am not using at the moment, (I've gone to cartos), I'll send them to you for free, just cost me a stamp, if you want them. No wraping, just install them. They are 2.0Ω to 2.4Ω pre-made coils.

Vape On
Burnie
:vapor:

How are those Fasttech coils??? I was thinking about ordering a 50 pack to use for PTII heads and when I finally get around to getting a KFL clone. Did you buy the wicked ones or just the coils????

Unless something internal has come loose, I rarely have my T3S leak from the tip. Not sure what's going on with yours. Most of the bottom coils are ok in any position. Some even "store" filled BCs upside down to avoid leakage down the connection, since then the air bubble is at the coil end.

But driving safely is a good thing! :)

While I do like my bigger tube mods, often when driving I'll have something smaller, on a lanyard. So if I need two hands, I can just drop it. Won't go far, and I'll be able to find it easily.

Just use the Ω check on your VV3 before putting power to any coil rebuild. Won't hurt it.

I don't know, but all three of them, the 2 T3S tanks and the MT3S, all drip like mad from the mouthpiece when I have them upside down for filling; part of all my "prep" now includes having pre-rolled paper towel tubes for stuffing in the mouth-end whenever I fill; it at least makes the cleanup easier. Neither the ARO Pyrex nor the Mini PT II does this, so I can only conclude that the "top" of the liquid chamber isn't sealed, in the xT3S's. Which maybe accounts for how prone they are to gurgling. I like 'em, that T3S was the first "real" tank I had (I ain't counting those iClear16's, 'cause they suck!), but they do have their issues -- I guess that's why they're only $6. :D

I'm looking at some much bigger tanks, for when I get that Sigelei; last night I was showing the ol man what I want for xmas -- a Nautilus. :D He said "Maybe." Then I showed him the Hypertank 2, just $13 at Desert Vapes, or $10 if I ordered from somewhere in China (because Desert Vapes doesn't have the silver one I want), and that price didn't seem bad to him at all, compared to the Nautilus. :D

I just stick it between my legs like a skinny soda can. :D That way I can find it easily when I want it again, and have control of it when I need both hands! I'm getting a pouch lanyard pretty soon, whenever that shipment from HK finally gets here. I figure probably mid-month; tomorrow will be 2 wks since I ordered it, so maybe a couple more. That will definitely make things easier for driving.

You bet I will! :thumb:

So far we have no idea what happened, to cause all that pain. They did x-rays, a cat scan; no slipped disc that they can see, though I have personal experience with a partially-herniated disc, and it hurts like the very devil, but doesn't show up on x-rays, since the vertebrae goes back into place after doing the damage to the disc. Still waiting to see if he will be staying at the hospital or going home, and if I will actually be needed to stay with my mom while my aunt goes to the hospital. My mom isn't mobile at all, so she really can't stay by herself for any length of time. Also someone may need to sit on her to keep her from going to the hospital herself; with her precarious health, she has no business whatsoever in a hospital unless she is herself an inmate of one.

Any idea where I might find something like that? Sounds like a pretty specialized tool; harbor freight, maybe? It would certainly ease my mind a lot if I wasn't poking at something electrical and "live" with metal!

Thx!

Fasttech sells them for 13 I think. Harbor freight may have it. Hobby Lobby may as well. Amazon for sure does.

Nothing a Google search can't locate! :)

Ok cool; probably Amazon then. I already informed my husband that because of Hobby Lobby's recent political/religious tantrum, we won't be shopping there anymore. Located a Michael's reasonably close, though I don't know if they carry all the same "crafts" stuff that Hobby Lobby does.

Thx!

Good choice to avoid hobby lobby IMO. They have great stuff, but I with you. Don't agree with the tantrum.

Edit: Amazon seems to be out of stock on all of them at this time.

Well, it seems I won't need to go babysit my mom today; they still know nothing, stepdad's still in the hospital until maybe they do know something, but if I know him, he won't be there long. :D

So I think I'll be taking a nap today, since I got up at 8am instead of my customary noon. :D
