Anybody has success with 30 or 28 AWG, having a good snug fit around the ceramic wick and wicking good at 12 watts and higher?

I tried 30awg but my results have, so far, not been good. Am I the only person who has tried this with less than stellar results? I'm using the correct material and have torched it to red hot. I found it very hard to wrap a hot spot free coil. The coil seems to stick to the material once it's fired which makes it almost impossible to even budge any of the coils. The only thing i can think of is that my first wick completely filled the wick hole. I've made it thinner so I'll try that shortly but if the stuff actually wicks better than ss mesh, why would you need space around the wick? I have no problem at all making perfect ss mesh wicks so I don't see how my technique is the problem. Oh well.

Nope. You're not the only one. Read my post from a few days ago if you missed it. lol I'm not giving up yet because I think some of the problems were user interface related. :D
Gonna give it another shot this weekend.

Out of curiousity what are you wick sizes? I found I like the 1/8" ones better, as the 3/32" ones dont seem to keep up with the demand and they are not as fragile.

Off topic for a minute. I clicked on your signature for Claire's mission trip. I assume by the title that Claire is your daughter. I want to be sure before I make a donation in return for your generous donation to the Jennifer cook Cancer Fund although I won't be able to match your donation. :) I hope others will click on your signature also.

Don't know if I'm just one of the people P.T. Barnum talked about, but I just ordered some. By the time they come maybe I'll have learned how to work w/ them before breaking them. Won't know if these are any better than the fish stones unless I try it, so there went another 20 bucks on vapin. Yikes - can't believe I paid that for a few pieces of stone.

And - my order of #500 SS mesh showed up today - if these bubbler stones work out - that's another expense that wasn't needed.

Ahhh, the modder's life :toast:

I wonder if dried coral would work as a wick...it appears to be porous.

Alveopora gigas. Skeleton. Great Barrier Reef, Australia. Showing corallites.

The structure of both simple and compound scleractinians is light and porous

I think that all such structures will be calcium based and probably not stable at high temps. Don't know for sure since I never tried to torch a chunk of coral.
I'm also reluctant to put more pressure on the reefs by coming up with a new use for coral.

It's hard to believe anyone would spend $20 on these things with all the problems that have been brought up.I think I'll just wait for the new improved cheaper version or make a few myself and see how it works out.
I seem to remember this stuff being tried a good while back without much sucess but maybe things have improved.

How is your coil sticking to the stone?

The first one I made just fit into the 3.5mm wick hole of the DID. It was over 1/8". I'm assuming the it will wick better if there is some space around the wick so I made it smaller and will try it tonight. I don't know what else I could be doing wrong. I'm sure it's something.

Well I tried this tonight and got a nice wick from the bubble filter that Dan has in the videos and used my Dremel to cut out a block and shape it to size. Cleaned it up and my kids came a runnin while I was sitting at the kitchen table placing the drill bit made coil over the ceramic and one bumped me, knocked over the PV and broke the wick at the entry hole (lol)

I was upset but figured I could make another one better. Come to find that I ground down the only diamond cutting wheel I had and it must have been just diamond "flaked" because I ground that thing all the way down cutting a new "blank". Oh well, maybe tomorrow I'll go grab another wheel and see if I can shape this new blank or maybe the stand-by Dremel "cutoff" discs will work (off to the garage lab now!)

I may not make it, it's cold and windy in NE Ohio and about 18F now outside :S
