I've used this on a couple of occasions to demonstrate that e-cig vapor/mist is harmless. I did it last night to end a disagreement with my 21-year old daughter, who smokes 5-10 cigs/day and thinks that e-cigs are no better or safer than smoking. She's hard headed and has to see it to believe it. So, I showed her.

Here's how to wow friends, relatives, colleagues, coworkers and blind strangers who are unfamiliar with the chemical and physical characteristics of that mysterious cloud coming out of your mouth and nostrils.

Get your best vapor producing delivery system, your best vapor producing juice and a freshly charged battery together. This works best indoors when there are no fans running and the HVAC system is cycled off.

First make sure that the setup is creating the best possible cloud by... you know... drawing on it a few times. :)

Get a large, clear and clean drinking glass in one hand. Your PV setup in the other. Take a long, slow drag and hold it in your mouth. Bring the glass up, look down into it and slowly release the vapor into it. Don't blow--just sort of let the vapor out and help it along by closing your throat and pushing it out.

Gently move the glass away from your face and hold it up for all to see. The vapor will stay in the glass and slowly dissipate.

Then, tip the glass as if you were going to pour a liquid, and most of the vapor will literally fall out. Since it is an airborne mist however, some of it will remain in the glass as it slowly dissipates. You can blow the rest of it out.

I took this picture last night. It's not the best quality, but it sure shows the phenomenon. This is about 3-5 seconds after "filling."

Edit: Finally got the image size and link right.

I've tried this so many times and can't get it to work. I used to love tricks when I smoked and also now that I vape. Smoke rings, rings through rings, etc.
But, every time I try this I get what I now dub the " Dry ice in a fake Halloween cauldron" effect. A little bit of vapor goes into the glass, but most of it just goes right to the top and immediately bubbles over. :(
What's your secret, oh wise one?

I used a 22oz Portland style beer glass, but any tall drinking glass should work. It has to be deep and narrow enough to allow the vapor to displace the air in the bottom of the glass. Short water glasses and such don't work well.

Ah. Perhaps that's my problem. Well, something to practice when I get home tonight. Thanks!

Oh I am so going to try this with my Sam Adams glass... after I displace (chug) it's contents of course. :)

If y'all are successful, post a picture. My image quality was not the best.

Very cool. But how does that prove its relative safety?

Well, it doesn't "prove" that it's safe, but that's not what the objective is. The objective is to demonstrate that the mist is not "smoke," because cigarette smoke is not heavier than air. Our exhaled mist is, and this trick demonstrates that. It's the same effect that occurs when a really good fog machine puts its "cloud" on the dance floor.

We know that cigarette smoke is a harmful substance. We're pretty sure that a fog machine's fog is not. Demonstrating that our exhaled mist is more like the safe substance rather than the harmful one is helpful in getting people to understand that what we're doing is not "bad" like smoking.

I'll have to play with this and see what I can come up with.

How it shows safe I'm not sure since you can do it with smoke (I do it with smoke off the smoker (for smoking meats) just to impress the grand kids, never considered doing it with vapor.

It would be worthwhile to use two identical glasses. Get smoke in one, get mist in the other and observe. My hypothesis is that the one holding the smoke will be empty far sooner than the one with the mist.

I understand your point - but I must say, I used to do that same trick with cigarette smoke in wine glasses.

Yep.... I've done it many times too, works a lot better if the wine glass is ice cold

I just did it again, and three minutes after filling, the glass is half full. I know similar tricks can be done with smoke, but as you mention the glass needs to be cold (to keep smoky air from rising) and I still think it would dissipate much more quickly, as the glass warms.

I don't have the wherewithal or the desire to repeat the experiment with cigarette smoke. :nah:
