That's an interesting commentary, Bill. Shortly after taking up vaping, I moved to DIY. I 'thought' I made a couple of good ones. At least I made some that were better than some commercial juices I had tried.

Recently, I've had a bit of a wake-up and certainly this thread has played a role. In the past couple of months I've had the opportunity to sample a few new commercial juices. Contests, give-aways, etc. I'm having to rethink my circumstances a bit. I find myself wishing that some producers might offer bulk quantities greater than 30 ml and at tempting pricing.

Yes, I know there can be too much of a good thing.

By the way, have you tried Rob's BlackJack from BlueMistVaping?

They smell like usual dekang.

Cop, where in Aus. are you? 7 days transit from China is pretty swift. And the prices are pretty cheapo.

One of the Hangsen flavours on that site is called Margaret. WTH?

I hope that I didn't sound churlish when I wrote that Tribeca didn't excite me.

scarf,

Not at all. Not one bit. Among the reasons I didn't list any of the "classic" juices was because I didn't want to inadvertently invoke the built-in exception-to-every-rule, namely, that no juice pleases everyone. That universally-loved juice that everyone embraces has never and will never be made. I was attempting to make a comment from beyond our inevitable likes and dislikes, so I deftly sidestepped the question of which juices were amazing.

What the heck, if I'd listed any particular juices as Ultimo Classics, I would have had to include BWB RY4, which I personally happen to not like much. But relax, I wouldn't have included Tribeca anyway. I like Tribeca (once well-steeped enough to "purify" it, or rather, "de-purify" it, LOL), but I don't consider it in the category of most amazing juices ever.

Do my disasters prompt me to take a deep breath and actually write stuff down, and vape it a drop at a time until perfection is achieved? Or at least a reasonable facsimile? Er, no.

Me, neither (sigh).

I posted my "editorial" mainly because I've had a few recent successes with DIY that stand out like shining pearls in the pigsty of my many DIY failures. But even my successes can't hold a candle to my favorite retail liquids.

By the way, have you tried Rob's BlackJack from BlueMistVaping?

Cool,

Yes, I have. In fact, I bought 180ml bottle of Rob's BlackJack during a clearance sale. I still have about 160mls. My personal opinion is that it's OK, but not special. I had hoped that I'd love it, since one of my all-time favorite go-to juices is Black and Tan from Clouds of Vapor, but it's 20 bucks for a 30ml bottle from COV. That price violates my Golden Rule of paying no more than 50¢/ml, so I've been looking for a cheaper replacement. Sadly, Rob's BlackJack didn't quite do it for me. It's vaguely similar to Black and Tan as a cigar blend, but B&T is better. In fact, nothing I've tried in a cigarish blend---and I've tried a lot---comes close to Black and Tan. That is one fantastic juice.

OK, I just got out my mega-bottle of Rob's Blackjack and vaped it head-to-head against Black and Tan. Wow, no contest. For me, COV Black and Tan wins by a mile.

I'm not a BlueMist basher, by the way. BM is the hands-down winner for bargain-priced bulk juice. C'mon, 180mls for $30? And that's not even on sale? Fuhgedaboudit! I mean, that's dirt cheap! For the sake of full disclosure, I have 180ml bottles of Robacco, Caramel Tobacco, Rob's BlackJack, and BlueMist RY4. The first three are variations on a theme (and all are a similar phosphorescent barn red in color) and worth vaping on occasion, while the clear-in-color RY4 is weird enough to barely qualify as an RY4, but strangely OK. And I do mean strangely. LOL. All told, I've bought 15 different flavors from BlueMist, and they're all over the map for me, from pretty good (the four I just mentioned, plus DK-TAB, Marshmallow, and Snow) to absolutely unvapeable swill (Boston Cream Pie, Buttercream Cupcake, Coconut Cream, and Rootbeer Float).

Man, I can't wait. I did one tankful of Tribeca and dumped half of it out because I didn't like it. It's been steeping now maybe three weeks. When should I try it again?

Sandy, I don't know what to tell you regarding steeping time for Tribeca. My first experience was with the sampler pack I bought back in May. That sample steeped for over 3 months in between my first vape and the second. My next purchase was a 30ml bottle I received just this week. The two were very different when fresh. The 7ml sample had the bug spray/hospital disenfenctant undertone and the 30ml did not. The 30ml did not taste quite the same as the steeped sampler though. My guess is Halo has changed something that tones down the unpleasant taste of the fresh juice. Just a guess, but Roxette has made similar comments - it is better fresh than it used to be.

How long since you dumped out half your tank? If it has been 3 weeks, I would try again now and not wait. See how it tastes to you and if it does not please, try again in a couple weeks. I have no way of knowing at what point in the 3 month steeping time that my first sample made its transformation since I never touched it for 3 months. My fresh bottle is good now for my palate!

Halo Tribeca is one of the cleanest tasting RY4s out there, imo. Just like all of their juice.

Another is Pink Spot Vapor RY8. Their description is simple and pretty accurate: "
RY8 is Pink Spot Vapors take on the popular RY4 flavor. The difference is the RY8 is simply twice as good!" I'm vaping it right now and I just can't get enough. It take RY4 to the next level. It's darn good juice!

shatner,

Glad you found a couple custom RY4s that you love. Finding juices we love is right at the heart of vaping.

I agree that Tribeca is very good. As for "clean," however, I'm one of many people who feel that Halo's signature "purity" base flavor tastes like hospital disinfectant and becomes palatable only after months of steeping diminish it. Seems that Halo has made the decision to tone down their base flavor, and numerous Halo juices now arrive without much, if any, of that taste. At least, I've read numerous posts to that effect, and I can attest that the Turkish Blend that Halo sent me in their recent giveaway has none of that taste.

And yes, I've read and watched numerous reviews praising PinkSpot RY8. Just for perspective, however, our UK correspondent, Zombitedesade, reviewed RY8 about a year ago on this thread and judged it one of the worst RY4s he'd ever vaped.

Here's a link to that review of PS RY8 (and yes, I understand that you will disagree): http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...ws/193327-really-big-ry4-roundup-long-83.html

My intent is not to challenge your opinions---you were careful to add an "imo" (which I appreciate), and I get it that what we like is what we like, period. I'm just restating the obvious, that taste is subjective and varies dramatically from one person to the next. With juices, one person's ceiling is another person's floor.

Now I really want to try PinkSpotRY8 and see what I think about it. LOL.

Exactly; taste is a VERY subjective thing. What I love, others will hate. What I hate, others will love.
I started vaping in 2010 for a while. Halo was new then and Freedom was all the rage. Unfortunately, I went back to analogs for a few years and am just now getting back in to vaping. So I have't really redeveloped a palate for vape flavors again. So I don't really notice the 'disinfectant' in Halo. But time will tell. It sure would be a shame if Halo changed things up.

But I have found that Copper Creek House Blend, Black Currant and Voo's Broo are absolutely delightful. You should give them a go if you haven't already. I'd be surprised if you did't care for at least one that I listed.

shatner,

Welcome back to the wonderful, weird, and whacky world of vaping! I was lucky, in that I stopped smoking cold turkey the first day I started vaping (Oct 2010). Haven't had (or wanted) a cig since then. My 40 years of smoking were like a long, bad marriage to someone I both loved and hated, who loved and hated me just as much in return. So far, vaping is all love---I never hate it, and it never hates me.

I haven't had any Voo's Broo, but I've got both House Blend and Black Currant. In fact, I've bought 30ml bottles of House Blend more than once. In a fairly anecdotal poll on ECF (meaning not very many votes were cast), CC House Blend won Juice of the Year for 2011, beating out NiteLiteVapor Bounty Hunter by a couple of votes. Both those juices have very broad appeal---one's taste buds have to be really "out there" not to find them at least moderately pleasing. I like 'em both, although Bounty Hunter gets more vape time from me. I think of them in the category of "mystery juices." Like Boba's Bounty, both House and BH are hard to pin down in terms of flavor components and recipe profile. Not really tobacco vapes, although they may have some tobacco flavoring, but more cakey and vanilla-y (with House apparently having a bit of chocolate or cocoa as well). While special, they don't come off as "amazing," at least to me---more soothing and comfortable, but still delicious.

Hi Shatner! I too am a devotee of RY8 and Voo's Brew I just reviewed Ry8 not long ago ...here.

Voo's Brew is fabulous too. It's that little twist of creaminess at the end that makes it for me. One of our colleagues on this thread...I think it was RickMC? said that VooDoo (different liquid) tasted like bourbon to him. I'm not a whiskey drinker but there was something boozy about VooDoo...Voo's Brew tones down that spicy whiskey-ness. It's just lovely.

Confession time: I do not understand what people mean when they say a liquid is "clean" tasting. Is it
1) that hospital/disinfectant taste I hear described (most often in association with Halo)?
2) flavors that are very strong, as opposed to mild?
3) flavors that are direct and identifiable, as opposed to muddled and "fuzzy"?
4) purely subjective, YMMV, IMHO, QED, XYZ PDQ, etc.

I thought I had a tank -- looked back, and it is just a dual coil carto. I tried it again today, first without adding any juice, and it was better. Then when I added juice, it's still kinda meh. But I think I am moving away from the dry tobaccos.

Shatner, what I hate I usually always hate, but sometimes what I love now I end up hating later, then come back to it and I like it. I forgot about Copper Creek House Blend. I really liked it. I ran out of it and never re-ordered. But out of the five Copper Creek juices I tried it was the only one I liked. Black Current and Voo's Broo are Copper Creek?

And Pink Spot? Never tried it. Heard it is pricey.

Thanks for the warm welcome. It's very appreciated! I saw that CC House Blend won 2011 flavor of the year. That's what prompted me to blind buy a 30ml bottle.
How does Bounty Hunter compare to Bobba's Bounty?

To me, it's purely subjective. I can't really explain it. I don't get the disinfectant taste/smell with Halo at all. In fact, I think Freedom, Torque and Tribeca are some of the best juices available.

I LOVE a good Bourbon. I'll give Voodoo a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

Yes, Black Crurrant and V's B are booth CC.

This is just me, but
Bounty Hunter = Captain Crunch
Boba's Bounty = Graham Crackers

Both are more complex than that.

Thanks!
