The Really Big RY4 Report Card

The grades given for these retail RY4s are my opinion only. They are also current judgments and may differ from grades I gave in the past. So please understand that if you base a buying decision solely on this list, you might end up getting an RY4 that I like rather than one you’ll like, since my tastes and palate are unlikely to match yours perfectly---in some cases, not even remotely.

Within each grade, the RY4s are listed in alphabetical order. This kind of judging is ridiculous enough without splitting hairs or nit-picking between RY4s within the same grade.

Mixing Percentages
The key to making good DIY RY4 from Pre-Mixed RY4 flavorings and concentrates is knowing how much (or rather, how little) flavoring to use. Flavorings require a higher percentage; concentrates work at lower percentages. Use too much of either and you will ruin the juice. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Start out mixing lean. Then---if necessary---add more flavoring very sparingly. Test-vape after each small addition of flavor. Keep in mind that the flavors will “bloom” with steeping---a DIY RY4 that seems to lack flavor when new may magically mature into full-flavor after two weeks, so exercise both patience and restraint.

When making a small bottle of DIY RY4 (6mls or less) using a very concentrated flavoring, adding even two drops to an existing mix can be enough to wreck the flavor profile. Increase the flavoring only one drop at a time. Remember: Less is best, and more is not necessarily better. Err on the side of using too little flavoring rather than too much! Below are my recommended percentages for different brands of RY4 flavorings:

Started vaping 3 new to me RY4s since last night. They all share one thing, they contain unique flavor notes that are new to me in a vape. Odd, weird, intriguing, and/or down right gross to me, depending on the juice.

BackWoodsBrew RY4. This juice is/was famous, and I can see why; and I don't think it's just because it was hard to get and now discontinued. I've spent the most time with this, a few hours last night, but I still have a ways to go to figure it out. It's tobacco heavy and the unique note to me is I'm guessing from the tobacco.. and it's.. yep that's pine. That shouldn't work, for some reason it does. It's not overwhelming, chemical, or gross pine, but it is clearly a pine note. Overall it's an odd juice to me, but it's becoming somewhat wondeful too. It seems fairly far from an RY4 so far, though it does have creamy vanilla and/or caramel notes that are showing the more I vape it, and the non-tobacco flavors also seem unique and quite impressive.

RevolutionVapor RY4 has a tobacco flavor I do not like at all. Simply put, I don't like this and won't vape it. The flavor is weird, if someone likes it they may REALLY like it, but I find it gross.

Janty RY4 2009-2010 edition. Oh my, I like this a lot! The unique note is new to me, but is instantly likable instead of starting out as odd like the BWB RY4. I just started this about 10 minutes ago, so this is very early impressions but it does click. I don't have any Janty DK or Classic RY4s on hand to compare it to, but based on memory it's the same or very similar caramel and vanilla notes; which to me is a little creamy, slightly stronger than lean, and very, very tasty. It seems about the same juice, but instead of the sour note in DK that goes a tad to far to me, it has a flavor that is new to me that I like. It is a little sour, I want to say in between classic and DK.

Typical classic RY4s, and even custom ones like the tobacco heavy NET RY4s I've had I can easily enjoy as a pleasant flavor about anytime during the day, and work great as a non-distracting flavor I can enjoy. The BWB and this Janty are ones that, at least for a bit, I'll want to vape when I'm actually thinking about the flavor. Right now these demand attention and contemplation. What distinguishes BWB RY4 for me is the Appreciation Learning Curve. Whenever I vape some, draws #1 and #2 are "What the hell?" 3rd, 4th, and 5th draws are "Well, OK..." Tokes 6-10 are "Hey, this is pretty good." 10-15 are "Pretty darn good," and by vape #20, "This is great!" It's like meeting someone who's not all that attractive to you at first glance, but whose comeliness and beauty emerge over time, so that eventually you find yourself entranced without knowing quite when that happened.

The combination of that "thick" piney tobacco and creamy vanilla with a little caramel to tie them together is unique and oddly addictive. Not very RY4-like, but who cares? Even after I vape BWB RY4 for 20 minutes, I'm not entirely convinced that I like it, per se, but I'm deeply satisfied anyway.

At this point, having vaped it off and on for almost three years, I feel that BWB RY4 deserves its legendary status. It does sort of break the mold for RY4s, however, and I occasionally wish that Don had given it a name other than RY4. But he didn't, so here we are.

I never liked casablanca much either. But his Applewood is in my regular rotation (never had anything that is close to being that good) as is his Espresso and capp but that's part of a mix (low parts of capp but it does add something to the mix). The only non- Dec. Vapours flavors that I vape regularly. Ahl. JG blend is a pinch hitter right now but not a regular player

I spent about a year and a half not liking BWB RY4. Started out loving it, then fell out of love with it and remained separated for 18 months with less-than-wonderful feelings, then gingerly tried it again about two months ago and discovered, to my surprise, renewed appreciation and enjoyment.

I agree with your feelings about both Casablanca and Applewood. I liked Casablanca some early on, but it didn't hold up for me, and I've never liked it since. Applewood is nice, although I don't find myself vaping it much, so it must not be that good to me. I still have most of my second 15ml bottles of both, now 2 1/2 and 2 years old, respectively. Of the 12 BWB tobaccos I've purchased, I like only about a third of them.

Ahlusion JG Blend is (to me) a tasty and pleasing tobacco-coffee vape, but I've got at least three other tobacco-with-coffee or coffee-with-tobacco juices that I like just as well, including one made from my own home-brewed NET and NEC (naturally-extracted coffee). Assuming good tobacco and good coffee flavorings to begin with, the tobacco-coffee combination is hard to mess up.

This thread has absolutely changed my vaping experience, no doubt. I have a mix of ECBlend RY4 and Vapor Knoll RY4 that is terrific, something I've been vaping for the last 8 hours. I have Heather's Heavenly Tobacco steeping on the shelf, life is good.

Thanks for starting this thread Bill, it is a wealth of knowledge and enjoyable to read every day. RY4 has really changed my vaping experience for the better.
