what am i doing wrong?

You arent doing anything wrong. There are some atties that have shorter 510's than others and without an adjustable positive pin, that atty wont work with that reo. Make sure you dont have anything between the atty and the mod (like an o ring). You can try to twist the base on as tight as possible (tighten, loosen and tighten again) by hand and then put the cap on. I have had caps prevent the atty from screwing all the way down. Switching batteries wont help this problem tho. If you trust yourself with a grinder, you can take the catch cup down a bit but it might be a better idea to either send it in for the new adjustable positive pin or get a different atty.

It is true that the Reo Grand was designed for use with the AW battery in mind, as Rob has said on multiple occasions. I will add that at the time the grand was designed, AW button tops were the only "tried and tested" quality unprotected battery on the market and I believe that played a very large part in that decision. All others were protected or had "fire" in the name which wasn't good at all... AW makes a 3000mAh flat top battery now, but all others are button top unless you go with a protected, which was designed to use in a regulated device.

It is also true that you can use a flat top battery in the grand also. Yes, (the throw will be slightly longer), but I would doubt there is anyone that can actually tell the difference because it is so minimal.

The current go to battery for me is the LG HG2, as the specs work best for my vape preferences, (<.5Ω). This may not apply to others here. A battery is as subjective as the atty one uses or the build inside... What one person sees or describes as MTL or DLH is far different than what others will experience. It is something you have to experience for yourself and recommendations might be far from what you expected... What works for others might not or will not work for others. This is where the most money is wasted in vaping for everyone.

I will leave it at that as that is a whole other topic of discussion...

Everybody's experiences are different. When I began using REO grands, I tried using Sony VTC4s, and I quickly noticed the increased button throw, over the AW 1600s I had, that were hold overs from my Provari days. I also noticed some visible arcing pits in the tops of the VTC4s, which I wasn't getting with the AWs. I had read other people's posts at the time, who were experiencing the same thing. So, I stopped using the flat tops. I do use LG HG2s in my Woodvils and P67s.

Jup, up until I got my brown hg2s a couple months ago, I used 4 gray panasonic flat tops I had, and one aw imr button top. Because the one button top was in regular rotation, I definitely noticed it, but luckily I'm not a button masher, and don't vape super low ohms, so don't have an issue using the hg2s with pitting or the throw.

I had tried the AW 1600mAh back when I first got my grand and I couldn't tell a difference... I think the difference is .5mm, (.0197), or there abouts. As I said before, very minimal and most would never notice a difference let alone even be able to see a difference. There are a few special people such as yourself though that can and who am I to question that!! I will be the first to agree with you on the VTC's though. I'm not sure what material the poles were mfg'd out of, but the entire line was very prone to arcing... I have had zero arcing in mine with the HG2's since switching to all silver contacts, top and bottom...

I have the yellow He2's.....I'm just getting into vaping, gimme a break lol
You might want to see about getting those replaced as LG has never made a yellow HE2, it was a pinkish / red color. If yours are yellow, you are a likely candidate for having fake HE2's... The HE4's were yellow...

I may try the HG2s in my Grands, at some point. I do recall there were some theories around, at the time, about the type of metal used on the Sonys possibly being prone to pitting. So, I never used them again in the Grands. But I did notice the increased button throw, even though it's admittedly not a huge difference.
