A few weeks ago I received some vapemail that included a item I was very interested in trying the Rocket. I had been reading and seeing quite a few people raving about the vape you can get from a kayfun type and wanted to see for myself. I originally wanted to try the stainless steel kayfun clone but at the time of order they were out of stock. So I figured I could try the lessor expensive Rocket first. And very glad I did. I ordered the chrome colored one but it also comes in blue and fuscia. It comes in a nice presentation box with quite a few spare parts if needed. All for the low price of $12.93. From order till delivery it was 10 days.

$12.93 Rocket Rebuildable Atomizer Kit (5mL) at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

After arrival I took it apart (pretty good threads) and washed all parts not because of bad smells or dirty but because thats what I do with all atomizers.
Just a word of caution if you also clean first. Be aware that the small oring in the center of the top cap is not securely attached and can fall out and go down the drain so remove and clean separately. I never use the precoiled wick installed on anything so I removed that also. For the next few weeks I proceeded to try many combinations of wick and wire.
Wire 28,30, and 32.(Some people were saying they had problems getting the 28 to clamp down so with all my coils I leave enough to do a complete wrap around of the screw head and then tighten down so have not had any problems.)
I have tried horizontal and vertical coils. On the vertical with wick packed around it. It reminds me of the draw I get from cartomizers in a tank not a big fan so will have to revisit it.

Wick Rolled Cotton,Yarn, Silica (Not a fan), Hemp (Thanks Junquedejour) Still trying to figure out what juices and temps I like with this.

Microcoils, Basic wraps, nano coils.

With all I lay the tails right over the wick holes and add some more wick on top of that (not packed in tight) but pressed in. So far I have not had leaks or any dry hits.

While all have worked great Some are more inline with my personal preferences than others so it pays to experiment. The chimney seems to amplify the flavor quite well.

One thing that was quite a surprise to me tho. When trying it the first day I got a nic buzz! When I first started vaping I tried 36mg, 24mg, and 18mg. The 36mg was giving me a similar buzz. Ended up settling on 32mg and for the past 2 years (When I felt I was ready) have been lowering it 1 or 2mg at a time until now I am at 16 mg. When ever something new comes out you always hear people say what great taste and its making them lower their nicotine level. But this is the first time it has happened to me.

It is not all sugar and spice tho.

One thing I had read about and did not realize just how annoying it could be was that kayfuns tend to whistle on the draw. It has two airholes on the base one straight in threaded with a adjustment screw. And 1 unthreaded at the diagonal. Some people have been able to stop the whistle by using the adjustment screw. I was not one of them. So before I started going at it with a drill I decided to try other things first. This is what works for me.

2mm Frosted Pony Bead Lacing | Shop Hobby Lobby

I had some of this stuff from another project. It slides in tight on the diagonal hole and has a hole in the center. So shoved it in and using nail clippers cut it flush with base. Worked great whistle went away and still able to adjust airflow with other. Although don't use it that way what I found was that if I remove airflow adjustment screw and stuff another piece in there it is at the perfect draw for me. YMMV

Filling

Every video I had seen and post read mentioned that the kayfuns had a fill valve on the base. Except for the Rocket tho. It has a screw plug which I did not know then so had to fill it from the top like others have recommended. It involves filling part way screwing on cap enough to catch threads and flipping upside down and tightening down cap. I never seemed to be coordinated enough to do it that way without some liquid escaping and unable to fill tank.
So I found what works best for me. Build wick and coil moisten with juice. Put rocket together turn upside down remove fill screw. Using a 14 gauge needle (fits perfectly in hole) fill with a bottle or syringe. I am able to get 4.2 ml of juice in. Replace fill screw and turn right side up no muss no fuss and no leaks.

The driptip. It comes with a pretty nice driptip unfortunately it is screw on so you cannot use your own although I do believe you can get a CE4 drip tip adapter cut off the bottom tube and screw it on and put your own on. I do not currently have one so cannot confirm. I did have some old CE4's tho so cut one down and tried it works great for those that do not like metal tips. Thinking a clear CE4 drip tip will look better tho. I will let you decide if you like the look with one of these. Here it is.

One thing some might call a problem is that it creates so much vapor that condensation builds up in the drip tip well and if you vape while in bed it can roll into your mouth so periodically sop up the liquid from the well.

All in all it has turned out to be a great experience. I have been very happy with this buy and will definately buy some more and some stainless steel ones to try. I now see what the fuss was all about.

On a side note I have been using it on a KTS+ while it works great and very comfortable in hand. New chrome Rocket on Old beatup Chrome KTS+ not the best look. So I decided to change up the look. Lately I haven't trusted my judgement on what looks good to me might look tacky to others SO Please leave me some comments on what you think of the new look?

I sanded my KTS+ down to brass and the 2 metal tank sections with the final pass with steel wool (Thanks Mattu29 for the tip)

If you decide to do this be careful with tank sections as you sand off the chrome the edges get very sharp.

Here they are.

Thank you for reading and once again please tell me what you honestly think.

Thanks for the great write up! I ordered the Tobeco kayfun lite clone from FT last week and am looking forward to receiving it (whenever that may be) I'm planning on doing a horizontal microcoil with cotton.

Your rig looks fantastic, like a hybrid. Nicely done!

Thanks VaPreis glad you like it. I also am planning to order one of the kayfun lites and look forward to comparing the vape between the 2.

Agreed. I'm another fan of the kayfun design. I have three dream 804s and both the tobeco and ehpro versions on order. I almost picked up one of the rockets but the screw on metal drip tip was a deal breaker for me. Congrats on solving that with the ce4 tip.

Thank you JD1 When I ordered it wasn't to sure about the metal drip tip myself but seems to work out no metal taste to my vape. But glad I can switch to plastic if needed.

One more tip: Since this is my first brass mod I had to google how to keep clean. Found one I like and is real simple. Mix Baking Soda and White vinegar into paste (remove battery first) rub paste on mod , rinse with water and dry with terry cloth towel. Back to shiny again. Took a whole 30 secs.:)

My first rocket build was a disaster leaking everywhere. Cannot figure out what happened. I have built several coils on my tobecco kayfun clone no issues. Totally bummed out.

Be sure and test your seals, which is easy to do. Just cover the air hole with finger or thumb and apply a lot of suction. If it's fairly easy to get a little air, then you'll need to figure out which seal is leaking. Try a piece of floss under the seal in you have one leaking.

If you are getting a good seal, then check your wicking and fill methods. The wick should come down to the shelf above the channels but not go in the channels. One good way is to pull them down there and cut them so the ends reach the shelf, apply a drop or two of juice and stick them down there. Another good way is to pull the wick tails up and put on the first section of chimney, trim wicks at top, then use your allen key or something to tuck the tails back down on the ledge (don't pack them), then screw on the top part of the chimney. Try both and see which method you like best.

If you're using the fill screw, be sure and keep either the air hole or drip tip end free for air to escape. In other words, the air needs to come back up through the channels and out the drip tip or air holes and the liquid comes up, so make sure you're not holding the unit resting the drip tip on a finger and happen to have another finger or thumb over the air hole.

Thank you Sonar505 for a great review and the tips. I got mine a couple of weeks ago and am still experimenting with it. So far I'm liking it and really appreciate that it doesn't leak no matter what orientation it's in. And the flavor is great :thumb:

Your sanded KTS looks really neat.

I've been filling from the top with the cap off and found it hard to keep the small O-ring in place while putting the top cap back on. My solution is to use a small screwdriver through the top cap with the drip top off like this:

It's pretty easy to put the assembly together with the screwdriver going into the chimney first keeping control of the O-ring.

I have made a few different coils for this puppy. What's working for me now is a simple horizontal micro coil. I'm using 27 gauge Kanthal and I found that if I use a small pair of needle nose pliers I can squeeze both wires either side of the screw together between the screw and the coil making the wire snug on the screw. It's a bit tricky to do, kind of needs a third hand, but I find I can screw the Kanthal down and the small screw heads do trap the wire well and consistently.

This is what it looks like after I trim the wick and add a small bit of cotton very gently placed over the juice feed slots to help it wick to the coil:

It's working acceptably now with 85% VG juice and a 0.7 ohm coil but I had to thin the juice with 7% water. It still didn't keep the coil wet enough so I had to restrict the air flow a bit. There's still room for improvement. I'm going to try it without the added cotton next, leaving the coil wick longer and see how that goes. This looks very interesting.

Thanks for the great write up. Was not thrilled with the metal tip and your suggestion on the ce4 tip was exactly what I needed. Just so happened to have a few with already short shanks so they fit perfectly with no modification. As you it took me a while to find the proper wick/coil configuration but found the horizontal 5 wrap figure 8 configuration just perfect. There's a link to this configuration below.

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...n-3-1-es-setup-re-wick-re-coil-my-method.html

This configuration gives me great flavor and vaper and no gurgling, whistles or dry hits. This thread shows a very good method of coiling and wicking. Also found the fill hole right away so this saved me the aggravation of filling from the top. All in all I am very happy with the rocket and ordered 2 more as well as FT's more expensive kayfun clone just to compare.
