I wonder what stance Health Canada would have if both the analog cigarette and the electronic cigarette were introduced to society today.

One thing I'm almost 100% sure of is that analogs would never get market approval, what with the carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, and myriad other chemicals given off by the combustion of tobacco and subsequently inhaled.

Maybe it's time Health Canada reevaluated their priorities.

I have little hope that we'll see changes any time soon - Maybe when e-cigs users out number smokers, our elected nimwits will take their fingers out of their !@# & start the regulation - and you can probably count on a nicotene tax on e-juice. I think that could be another 5 to 10 years. I'm finding my friends and family are way too slow to get on the vaping bandwagon - they seem interested at first but are either too scared or too cheap to dive in. Let's face it, tobacco taxes generates multi million dollars in Canada - that shortfall has to come from somewhere. Added to the equation is contraband cigarettes which in its own can cause revenue losses as much as 50%. I think its more like 20% but I read 50%.

They can make the contraband cigarette problem go away entirely by lowering tobacco taxes and making contraband less lucrative and desireable and they have done it in the past but as they say, history must repeat itself. I guess the higher revenue from legit smokes sales outweighs the loss from contraband cigs. Who knows what the method to their madness is?

Lowering taxes may sound easy but its not - The price of Canadian cigarettes are more political than we think & are influenced by our neighbours to the south. I was in Buffalo 2 weeks ago & an American told me that US cigs are headed to $13/pack in NY State. With our trade relations, do you really think Harper could lower smokes to $8/pack. I don't think so! I also grew up in Cornwall, On - this is Canada's largest passage route for contraband due to its logistics - St Lawrence River with a short boat ride from a native indian reserve - back in the 90's when the cigs hit $9 for the 1st time - there was nearly a war on this island with the indians, OPP, QPP & the mounties who were going onto indian soil to search homes for contraband. The indians have weapons like AX47's etc. They even had a tiny German sub for transport. It's an outrageous story.
