Could be...

More than likely the whistle came from the air port. Gunk on the coil probably lowered the velocity so that a harmonic oscillation set up on one of the hard edges in the air path.

PLEASE have pity on me! Are you funnin' with me again? What "hard edge?"

I'm getting confused here, so maybe I should just think of it as a "stoopid, change your wick" alarm and call it good! :w00t:

I'm not kidding at all. There's a very easy way to test this. Pull air through the Atty at different rates. You'll find a specific rate where it whistles

Oh, you mean Mitch :D

Well, I'm not a personal friend, so I didn't know! LOL! Yes, MITCH! :D

OK, Rich just read all that stuff you guys wrote and 'splained it to me in 3rd-graderish, and now I get what you mean. ;) Even though the wick was still "soft," the gunk was impeding the airflow somewhat, probably setting up a vibration. I think. Remember, I'm the one who doesn't "do" physics. Except when my forward momentum exceeds my ability to stop in time when my foot runs into a frozen cow plop. :)

I don't get much of a whistle, even with my Achilles that I put the whistle-screw back into... but sometimes when I need to dry-burn/rewick, I get an unpleasant "sputtering" kind of sound/sensation. Maybe the same sort of thing, just coming thru your airflow it turns into a whistle -- just like if your nose is stuffy, sometimes you get a nose-whistle. :D

What's really funny is when my cat is lying there sound asleep, and her little nose is whistling...

I'm really NOT stupid, you guys, but this is all new to me, so it's going to take a while for all this stuff to sink in. :)

Trust me Lannie, these two fine upstanding individuals, one from Kapax and the other a mad scientist would never ever pull your leg, unless the opportunity presented itself :D

I had the unpleasant sputtering right before the whistle. Lucky me, I had both! LOL! Next time, the unpleasant sputtering will be my cue to change the wick. ;)

Yes, THAT part I'd already figured out. :p I'm a good target for a tease, because I'm so gullible. I always assume everyone is speaking the truth, and it makes me an easy mark. The guy we buy our hay from is the WORST - he can feed me all these BS lines with such a straight face, get me all worked up about something, and THEN, after I've suffered enough, he grins. So trust me, Boden and Sir Robert aren't the first, and they won't be the last.

Sorry about the way I tried to explain it yesterday, that's what happens when I'm around grad students
