I also dislike the term "stinkies". I also dislike the term "toot". Veterans of ECF will remember this.

Stinkies and toot = farts. Yep, that's the one and only thing I think of or hear in my mind when I see the words "stinkies" and "toot". Farts. So I don't use those terms. And like the OP said, I hear it in a three-year-old's voice.

I don't call people out who use those terms as that would be exhausting and pointless, but yes, I wince internally whenever I see an adult or a certain Youtube reviewer use them.

I just call them "cigs" or "real cigs".

It's the same way I feel about the term "my bad". I hated it when it first appeared in our lexicon, I still hate it to this day. I've never, ever used the term "my bad" unless I'm using it specifically in a sentence, like the one I just typed. It's "my fault" or "I'm sorry", not "My bad".

But I'm .... retentive about stupid stuff so I understand I'm in the minority.

P.S. "Analog" makes me think of either a synthesizer or a wristwatch.

I don't like toot either, lol. How do you feel about "shart"? Jk

It's weird but I sort of like the term 'stinkies.'

Stinkies, stinkies, stinkies, yeah, stinkies.

Although 'Stinkarettes' really is brilliant.

I sorta like it too. I think part of the reasons that there are negative nicks for ciggs is just normal human psychology. If the name you use for something always reminds you of something you dislike from a particular activity.. Its harder to glamorize or remininse of.the good.times of smoking.

Lots of people focus on the smell side of cigarettes as a big deterrent.. So thats why stinkies is a common term for ciggs.
As the saying goes, absence makes the heart grow fonder.. Most memories you focus more on the good than the bad.. unless you try to remember the bad.

So calling them stinkies sunconciously reinforces our dislike for that former habit. That makes it easier to resist triggers daily..

Now im no psychologist.. But I did stay at a holiday inn express this one time...

yup stinkies its a negative connotation..
smoker who want to quit require the negative connotation to help them mentally disassociate themselves from cigarettes...
but consider the point when one was smoking, it supplied a source of stress relief, a method of socializing, and other things that were advantagious during that time. Did we use terms that were "antismoking" while we were engaged in that habit/ritual? I didnt...
and now since we want to quit, we use such terms...

Good point, Bunnykiller. While keeping the negative connotation is important to maintain the cognitive dissonance between vaping and smoking, using it in a childlike form such as "stinky" also lessens any antipathy between former-smoker vapers and current smokers. If I use language that strongly condemns the practice of smoking because it helps me distance myself from the practice, I could be engendering dislike, hatred, and entrenchment among the very people who would benefit from vaping. Just because I no longer smoke does not mean that I am any better than someone who still does.

I'm extremely .... retentive about anything to do with language... the one that drives me up a WALL is "I'm just sayin..." YOU'RE JUST SAYIN' WHAT EXACTLY??? Is what I always want to reply that little ear-barb... ARGHHHHHHHH!

And of course, ALWAYS, using "impact" as a verb. AAAARGHHHHHHH! It's a NOUN!!!

I agree with the op here. I'd have to really, since I've actually said almost the exact same thing before. On this forum.

I'd vote to call them smokes. No one that vapes would ever mistake vaping for smoking.

edit: the word that spread around the irritates the crap outta me is "ratchet", being used incorrectly because some idiot couldn't be bothered to pronounce "wretched" properly.

Laughing, Andria--I always think that "just sayin" thing is regional. I have lived all over the country and never heard anyone say it but here in Western PA.

I think TV has spread it around... I hear it on SOME show at least once a week... Always makes me want to smack whoever said it!

^^^ i'm in L.A. and was wondering: where are you people?? or how advanced in age are y'all?? lol

I'm in metro Atlanta... and yes we do say "y'all"... but never for singular you, only for plural you -- it also annoys me to death when I hear someone trying to mock a southern accent, say "y'all" for just one person. ARGHHH! It's a contraction for YOU ALL!

Not sure what age has to do with it, but I'm 52... 53 next month. Why does it matter?

ROFL... wasn't "ratchet" the evil nurse in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest?
