I tried it once and because they were fully submerged, the water got in the bottles and ruined everything :(

Seems to me that would be more the fault of the bottles used then the method. Although thermos cup steeping is the least efficent of all methods if using the correct glass bottles with proper caps it will work just fine.

i would assume this thermos is less hassle to use than a crock pot. All you do is pour in some water at the proper temp, put in your bottle and wait. No need to monitor the temp as you do in a crock pot. It weighs much less than a crock pot and since it requires no electricity, you can take it around with you. The only question is how uniform will the temp stay over a 4 hour period. It may not be a big factor anyway.

It depends on the thermos cheap ones will cool quickly better ones will cool less quickly but still temperature is not constant like regulated warmers or UC's. But for those on a budget it is a good option.

With my crockpot I put in hot tap water plug it in set it on low. I go make my few bottles of juice by the time I am done making it my crockpot is 150 degrees. Also it stays at that. As for how uniform will the thermos stay? Not sure but even if the temp drops some it will still give you a good start on the steep. I still like the idea hey kids we are going to grandmas house got to bring her fresh steeped e-juice :toast:

Mrdap, What brand is your crock pot? Mine has two settings and neither one stays at 150.

It is a 10 year old Hamilton Beach. I got from wally world. Some of the newer ones have a dial to set the temp. The last time I used it I made 6 different flavors. Some will last a few months others maybe a week. That's why I like the thermos idea. You can make one or 2 at a time. So what if you need to change the water once. Maybe some juices you just let it go cold then the juice is done?

Thanks. I picked up a Thermos yesterday at Walmart that costs around $16. It keeps hot for 7 hours vs 5 hours for an ordinary one. The heat loss over time is insignificant - only 5 degrees in one hour. Heat the water in the microwave for 15 secs and it goes right back up to 150 - but that probably is not even necessary. Like you said, leave the juice for 7 hours and the juice is probably done.... So much more convenient.

This is what I got:

OK so the big question is when are you going to use it? You will have to let us know what you think of that method.

Update: Of the three juices that I steeped in the thermos, two came out very nicely, and one still needs some work. However the trouble with that one may lie with the juice, not with the thermos. It's a TFA RY4 double which has always given off a chemical flavor to my taste buds- regardless of how long a steep. I compared this recent batch with one that was naturally steeped for nearly 5 weeks, and they both taste exactly the same. Therefore it seems the thermos has done its job cutting the steeping period to a few hours instead of a few weeks. Altogether I am very happy with the results.

I learned that the heat loss can even be reduced further by placing an insulting material such a small towel on the bottom and wrapping it around the body. Have you steeped any juices yet?

I did 2 off the wall custards yesterday. They turned a nice shade of rust lol. I have them sitting in a dark place not sure if I should take the caps off for 24 hours or just let them sit. That is still a mystery in the making I think.
