Thick wick/larger coil vs thinner wick/smaller coil

I been rebuilding my protank with cotton and discovered that instead of using the coil size that comes standard on the protank and then placing a strand of cotton on top. I can just make a slightly larger coil and wick and not need to place a strand of wick on top of the larger coil.

So pretty much I'm just making a bigger wick and coil. I feel like I'm getting more vapor but not sure if the taste is better or worse. Is there a science to this or is it all in my head and doesn't really matter as long as it vapes?
