I thought it would be great to see what people do to get ready to ship a PIF.

I bought some small plastic bags in the craft section. I will make up several "offers" and put them all in a bag. One bag = one offer. I put 2 white peel off labels in each baggie to write the address on when I get it. The next time I have to get up I grab an envelope and put the baggie in there and the labels on the front of it. The baggie not only helps to keep it a little more organized but keeps it from leaking out of the envelope and onto an unsuspecting mail carrier.

Sallana did something that I think is great. She put her username on the back of the envelope. It's difficult to keep up with real names and this lets someone know who they are getting their package from.

When I found PIF I dove in head first... So I have sent a lot of packages to a lot of people. When you are on a budget you find ways to economize and still make things look nice and arrive safely.

First thing to do is if you have not already done it - Get a stamps.com account. It's free for the first month and they give you 5$ to start off with. It's 16$ a month after that. I do love stamps.com. You can't print first class labels from USPS.com. I'm not sure if I will pay the fees per month but it might be worth it. I havent decided. But I have time to do so, that's why I like it.

Additionally stamps.com does offer some really nice deals when you first sign up, and there really are no strings attached. You do get 5$ free postage, which is totally worth it if you are in a bind. That's about 3 PIFs. (If you have a printer). They also send you a cute little welcome package. (labels for printing). Additionally, they offer a postage scale "Free" you have to pay shipping and handling. Mine came to like, 9$. I sstill haven't bought it yet but I probably will before my trial is over. You can't beat a 10lb USB postage scale for 9$.

Okay, so here are my 'tricks'

Hit up your local dollar store. Mine sells bubble mailers for 50cents. (2 for a buck in a package) buy some of those. Also, buy some nice looking wrapping paper.

The wrapping paper is for re-using bubble mailers that were sent to you. I'm sort of OCD and I like things to look good, so I've taken to wrapping the bubble mailers in wrapping paper so the previous labels are 100% hidden.

Sometimes using stamps is a great way to economize on shipping and can be more convenient as you don't have to go to the post office. But please be sure to put ENOUGH stamps on the package.

If you go to USPS.com you can get 100 small flat rate boxes for free. Do it.

Once you get them, guess what you can do? Turn them inside out, wrap them up with your wrapping paper and mail them first class. If you are really short on funds and need to save pennies, this is a great way to do it. It costs the same to send a box as it does a bubble mailer. YOu might want to go to your local PO just once and weigh the box in comparison to the bubble mailer so you know how much each weighs, as this does affect shipping costs. The box might weigh a TINY bit more.

Another good tactic, if you are sending a SMALL package. (say no more than 5 3ml bottles) you can take a 6x9" bubble mailer and cut it in half. Then you have two. I've done this a couple times and they have always gotten to the recipient. Do not cut it into fourths. Did that once and the package got lost. Had to send more jice out.. so LEARN FROM MY FAIL. :D

I have taken to always covering my packages in boxing tape unless it's a regular flat rate box and I've paid the 5$.. those are sturdy. But otherwise, this helps prevent holes being poked into bubble mailers and secures your wrapped priority box so that it wont rip and give you away. Do not skimp on the boxing tape! It's cheap.

Always save bubble mailers and be sure to check to see if the stamps have been post marked - often they do not mark them because they are lazy. This has saved me a LOT on shipping costs.

In the end, these tips and tricks will save you a few bucks but please make sure to use them when appropriate. Make sure you know what you're doing, how much your package weighs, and that you have put enough money on it/packaged it in a way that it will not get lost or cause stress to those who receive it.

Yay I wrote a novel.

Oh yeah, and always put your forum username somewhere on the package. :D

Homeish now
I always forget to do that.

Thirds

I also use stamps.com it might not be cheaper...but I like the fact I dont have to run to PO for each one. Soon as I have an address, I can package it up, have it ready to send and it's in the mail the next day (Unless I hand it to the hubby..then it sits in his truck for week...)

Another good trick is to write down when someone offers you something. Be it from a PIF, a trade, or if they are just giving you something.

For one, this will help when you realize you've been forgotten but can't remember what said person offered, or you remember the offer that you were supposed to get but not who offered it.

For two, it will prevent embarrasing situations like the one I was in, when three weeks ago LastTango said that he would ship me some bottles when he placed a new order for himself. When the bottles arrived, I had forgotten all about the promise he'd made. And I sent him a PM demanding to know how the hell he got my address :D

Yeah I taped over some. I think it was Brandee's.. if so then she got it just fine. But I send a lot of PIFs. Not everyone PM's me to tell me they got it, but I assume if they didn't I would hear something from them. So I think it's okay!

But you can also just cover up the writing on the bubble mailer and write over it. (white sticky labels work great) that way no stamp removal is needed!

That's one of the reasons I use the white labels. They come off pretty easy if you are careful and then you can reuse the envelope.

I try to write every transaction down in a note book
I put send/wait...in () i put whether it is a gift, or pif, or buy, then i put the screen name, and if i know it, the persons real name, and the date next to that then under that I put everything in the said Pif/ gift / trade.. and if it is a pif i am offering once someone takes it I put there info there, and then i write down the day i shipped, and once they rec. it I mark it off w/ a highlighter. i do the same once I rec something i am waiting for, then a diff color after i contact them. and I keep all my PMs that have to do w/ transactions, till they are completed. and when i contact someone to accept a pif, i try to add the post # so they and I can look back at it. And I always try to put a handwritten note in my PIFs,with my nick. also put it on the package. I try to keep all my juice in one area, my favs in one area, some that I can vape, then some that i know I can give/ together so i can scan over them easily. I have bunches of baggies diff sizes too... big help! everything having to do with PIF is all right together. not very pretty, but it works! now look what I've done...sorry..lol

I use a spreadsheet. It started because I wanted to keep track of what I was spending/saving etc, since I couldn't find a sig counter that took into account that I was still smoking cigs every once in a while. I do the same thing. Date, name, what it is, how it was given/accepted and when applicable, how much. I also include shipping since that can be a big part of it (so thanks for the tips).

I open the spreadsheet as soon as I buy/trade/pif something and it stays open in the background. I check it occasionally to make sure that I haven't forgotten anyone. lol. You know what I mean if you read my post in 'chit chatting' lol.

I have a large clear bag that all my PIF items are put in. As I put a new item into the bag I list it in my notebook. I keep all my bubble envelopes, stamps and tape all in one place. When I take a PIF I can flip thru my notebook and select some items to post. I refuse to take any PIF unless I know I have a way to get it in the mail the next day. Its frustrating for everyone waiting on a package Thats my little set up and so far its worked okay.

That is close to my set up. I have a one drawer bin that I keep all my PIF stuff in. It fits perfectly under my hospital bed, even when it's all the way down. I just pull out a pre-filled baggie, even has the label in it, and post what's in it. I'm not organized enough to write it down, plus I'm lazy, lol

that's also y i don't take many PIFs
A lot of us on here are disabled and on a limited income. We understand delays in getting to the post office. I myself have to depend on my kids to do it. Since I have such a weird sleep schedule, if I don't catch one of my sons at night to tell them I need them to make a run, they sometimes get out of the house before I can tell them. If it's going to be more than a day or two, just shoot a PM to the person getting your offer and let them know what's going on. SO go ahead and get in PIF. Small delays aren't a bad thing.

well my problem is my income is more limited than most because i don't know how to work the government nor really want to so i manage to scrape together a whopping $50/mo (can go UP TO $100 in a pinch but that's rare as usually that other $50 goes to food as well) for all that is not food. the rest is good graces of my friends and me helping out where i can, only 1ce in a while managing to find the occasional odd job as while my back works my attitude doesn't and my job history shows it making me the job market's least wanted...lol
