Wanted to start this discussion because it has always interested me. Ive wicked just by tightening the cotton and tucking it into the well but ive also tried fluffing and then tucking into the well and ive never noticed the difference. the only time ive noticed a difference is when i change the overall density of the cotton i am using

Well have you noticed any difference from when you comb and when you dont

Yes, I over wick, then comb to pull out and straighten fibers, until I get the right tension I want in the coil.
Seems to absorb better for me.
    I use cotton and Rayon.
Really the right way, is what works for you.

There's a few wicking experiments on a man named Morton oen's YouTube channel that really helped me allot "dry hits no more" ever since watching his tests I used to fluff comb and thin tails cuz that's what everyone told me but now I wick hard and thick with minimum prep just rip off the biggest piece i can get through without tweaking my build or what not and cut it to length n tuck it. It wicks great and hold allot more juice too. Like Night and day !!!!!!!!

Do the chunky wicks from way back. The bigger the fire, the bigger the hose.

    Good luck. :)

I fluff when using RTA's; when fluffing I never get dry hits. When I use RDA's I wick "hard", as Morten so aptly puts it. However, when I wick hard with an RTA, I'm almost guaranteed a dry hit. I think that wicking hard on an RTA causes the juice flow to be obstructed, and possibly messes with the vacuum.

Rayon, however, is a different story. With Rayon I try to fit as much as possible through the coil, and I might cut off a bit of the cotton tails if it seems to be too much for the wick ports on an RTA; I don't fluff, though.
