I've assembled a tool to wrap my coils. After doing about 3 coil wraps I thought "There has to be a Better way"

So I came up with this.

IMG_0153Edit.jpg

It's a piece of hard maple with a 3/32" drill bit sunk into it with a angled slot cut into it right at the edge of the drill bit. It is angled in 2 directions. As you can see in the image, angled away from the drill bit and it also has slope so right at the drill bits back side the slot ends.
You put the kanthal in the slot and hold it down with your thumb along the flat side of the small maple block and then start your wraps as the Kanthal comes out of the slot right at the back side of the drill bit.

I cut the slot with a very small Japanese pull saw.

Now if I had some Kanthal I could put it to work.

This will also work for parallel wrapped coils by putting both strands of Kanthal in the slot.

I have an almost identical rig, Shootist - less the neat/clever Japanese pull saw slot detail - made from a scrap of 13mm round carbon fiber bar stock.
Much like yours, I just hold my wire with thumb - but the smart little slot would reduce effort & eliminate wire slippage - and bonus... appears to be a bit more "Kanthal friendly" than the seemingly more popular holes and screws.

IMO, it's a great idea... meaning now I guess I'll have to slot mine - although I suspect my slots won't be quite as slim & attractive as yours. ;-)

Something I've done with mine to eliminate the wonkyness of fishing around with multiple size mandrel holes, or having your fixture look like Sputnik... if you step diameter the single drilled hole, you could fit varying size mandrels, using your same slick slot/wire holder.

I just use a 5" set of vise grips to clamp an end of the wire and provide weight. Lot easier to change sizes of the mandrel and a lot handier to have a set of vise grips around the house than a chunk of wood. I can just angle the mandrel since the vise grips are just a weight at the end of a wire. That way I get a nice tight wrap the entire length of the coil.

Yeah, I like the fluke lead from my 99b meter.. perfect handle/grip for me..~2mm

Yeah I was thinking about using the meter lead end. Mine comes in at .0785 +/- (2 mm give or take) and a 3/32 drill bit is .09375. But then I don't have a slot to place and hold the wire. That was my main reason for making this tool. When trying to hold the drill bit and the wire at the same time my fingers got in the way of making the first loop around the bit.

I'm not as handy with drills and saws, so I picked up a coil jig from vapordna that has been fabulous. No need to hold down the end I'm not wrapping, as the jig holds it down for me. I can use different sized bits as well. The price for something so simple is a bit much in my opinion, and yours is certainly prettier. I wish I could make one.

    No you can't
I use a DeWalt drill. Came in *real* handy wrapping my first parallel coil today. In fact it worked so well I made a second one for my TOBH, lol.

Yeah. I had nothing to do for awhile today and tried the same thing with my battery operated Ryobi drill, I was totally surprised how tight and small it turned out, didn't even have to heat the wire up it's springy and uniform best coil I ever made. If it does a good job I think this how I'll be making my coils from now on. It turned out so good that I'm in shock.
