Northern NJ native , Coastal NC now.
Most coil wire is thin enough to use any type of flame and it should glow in short order so don't get caught up in ordering some so called high tech torch .

I like mini butane torches that can be found at Home Depot etc.. for about $10.00 but some use refillable small butane lighters and their fine as well , any lighter will work but butane refillable's are what i like.

No need to buy from a Ecig vendor , you will always pay more.

I use a $9.99 torch pen I bought from Lowes on 22-26ga. Everything else I tighten on the deck. But I run mostly nano dragons. Except for my cloud RDA, which I torch before ohming.

I had to torch this one. WARNING: please do not replicate this build unless competent in battery safety and mechanical mods.

So Cal
a bic lighter works...Kitchen stove...also those cheap torch lighters from a liquor store work.

I got my torch from Harbor Freight for $7 or $8...butane from Home Depot $5. Home Depot had the same torch for $20.

I torch my kanthal first then wrap a coil, then torch the coil after wrapping to compress or will just compress the coil after firing the mod...

Everyone has their technique Ive tried wrapping and dry firing yes it works Ive torched and yes it works. Personally I use a kanger product so by habit when building I always always torch my coils to carbonize them before putting them into the coil base. Just pull them off of what wrapped them on torch them real good and put them back on the bit or whatever. Sit them down in the head and finish building. I havent had one short out yet. By nature when im building a coil for my rebuildable I torch the coils before installing them. Im not sure if a lighter gets the wire hot enough to carbonize or not. Ive done it that way though and not had any problems.
