"Townes Van Zandt is the greatest songwriter of this generation and I'll stand on Bob Dylan's coffee table in my cowboy boots and say it".
-Steve Earle
When we go to shows in Minneapolis, my buddy Kevin grew up in the suburbs there and is great friends with Luke Zimmerman who's Bob Dylan's nephew. Luke has a very nice condo in the warehouse district of downtown Minnie, and as long as he's not performing in town and using it (he's a musician as well), he allows us to when we go up for shows.
On one occasion we had to return the keys for the place to Luke and drive out to the Dylan compound northwest of minnie. Luke and his wife's place was being renovated and they were staying across the drive in Bob's place (who spends most of his time hopping around anyway). So we sit down inside, and I'm looking at what constitutes Bob's coffee table, thinking about what Steve Earle said. Luke is an observant lad and says something to the effect of "But you're not wearing cowboy boots". Carpe Diem, right? so I replied, "yeah, I wore Chuck Taylors because they have softer soles". He pauses and says: "FIVE SECONDS STARTING NOW!" So in a flash I'm on it bellowing out Eric Cartman style (all squinty eyed X0) "Townes Van Zandt is the greatest songwriter of this generation". After regaining composure and returning to my seat Luke says "You're not the first...". Bless the kid for having a
sense of humor.
Quite possibly the greatest moment of my life.
