I think the saddest things I experienced was when I went to the hospital once for some surgery, a huge group of people, in wheelchairs, with I.V. trolleys, in hospital gowns standing outside puffing away. I thought to myself "I am gonna be one of these people someday...". Then it surprised me my first thought WASN'T "Why am I killing myself with these things".

When I reported on people in nursing homes for various stories, I used to love to watch the really old folks puffing away at outside tables (I was a smoker myself at the time).

Even with their wildest claims, anti-smoking zealots say about 50% of smokers die of a smoking-related disease or condition. That means half do just fine through old age, until the bitter end. I smiled when I saw the "safe" half.

And you know what that means? Some people have great genes, bubba.
