Me personally, I quit smoking cigarettes a few yrs ago cold-turkey after many attempts. I was at the point of making them myself w/ a little crank machine. I hated how gross, expensive, and unhealthy the habit was, and that was enough to finally make me quit. Then last year, I started using snus occasionally. I liked the nicotine boost, and how it was less gross than dip, not requiring spitting. I started getting the potent Swedish type, and was liking it even more. After that I was unable to easily get the Swedish type nearby, so I started doing dip again, cuz the American snus just doesn't cut it. This went on for a few months, and I'd even have an occasional cigarette here and there. No more than a few a week, but it bothered me. So that's when I finally got w/ the program and ordered an e-cig. I don't vape too much more than 1 mL a day total, which I think is light usage, and I'm able to enjoy those nice effects of nicotine. I'm just kind of amazed at how ingenious and efficient of a delivery system e-cigs are, not to mention the health aspects compared to smoking. I really don't feel guilty at all about it!

A week into vaping and I keep getting this nagging voice telling me that I'm just trading one addiction for another, albeit a healthier one. Has anyone succeeded in eventually going over to nicotine free liquid without going through the pains/pangs of withdrawal? Does anyone have that goal?

So the nagging voice is absolutely correct. The question is, what is the addiction you are gaining? You can get down to 0 nic, but will you quit vaping then? If not, the new addiction is NOT the nicotine, it is the habit (in general) of vaping. Is that an addiction you can live with? Certainly, and for a bit longer statistically than the smoking addiction. Does it matter? That is something ONLY you can decide.

I don't really care. I smoked 48 years and if I even cut my losses in half I feel like I'm doing good. The extras of you smelling like crap, your house covered in tar, getting sick when it's most inconvenient and you have to ask which is better. I have cut down a lot from when I started. Yeah maybe another addiction is better.

I guess because I work in the addiction field I'm super sensitive to that nagging voice. I'm just going to have to learn to ignore it and take it one day at a time.

Yep, I feel the same way. Though I feel less that way now.

Smoking cigarettes has such a long standing tradition and was once the norm, so it doesn't seem as if it's anything out of the ordinary.

Vaping, on the other hand "looks" different and we do tend to care about how others perceive us. So vaping a faintly weird/unusual device tends to draw more attention and seems abnormal. Realization dawns, that vaping is feeding an addiction. Thus extra emphasis is placed on an activity that would normally be ignored, or barely noticed by most people. Comes down to perception.

I started vaping, not for enjoyment but purely to give up smoking. I now really enjoy vaping and only been at it for a month and have probably spent more than I would have on fags. However, I have already dropped from 24 -18 nic level without any pain, and will hope to reduce to 0 nic within 4-5 months. So I can enjoy vaping, knowing I'm not a slave to nicotine :)

I smoked tobacco for more than 52 years, (2.5 PAD when I started vaping); I vaped for 3.5 years; Feb 6th was my last vape. Now. . .I do neither, nor do I miss either.

I started vaping with the intention of quitting both habits eventually. Surprising how easy it was. JMHO

Here's another thread on it.

I'm about 3 months into vaping after 47 yrs. of smoking cigs. I started in order to quit smoking and it worked. I think I am safe from going back to cigs now. I certainly can see stopping vaping as a reachable goal probably within a year....I am already only buying 0 nic juices. I've had a good time playing with the devices, juices, this forum, etc. I think a lot of my initial enthusiasm was related to being so utterly thrilled to be able to quit cigs so easily though. I am still delighted about that! But I find myself vaping a bit less than previously and thinking more often about quitting it eventually. If I found that quitting vaping resulted in being tempted by cigs again, I would definitely continue to vape and not feel particularly bad about it.

I dunno how long you smoked but I had to be very careful listening to that voice in my head during the first 6 months. Those other chemicals in cigarettes can be be pretty devious and will set you up for failure if you listen to them. Its amazing what your mind will rationalize if it wants something bad enough.

Case in point; My doctor found a lipoma (benign fatty cyst) on my right shoulder a couple of years ago and I was convinced at the time it was from vaping. I used that as a rationalization to go back to smoking.....something thats a 1000 times worse for my body than vaping will ever be.

Fortunately I came to my senses and I havent looked back. Lipomas are pretty common in guys over 40 and nothing to worry about. Its not even noticeable under a shirt.

As far as the addiction goes, thats totally up to you.At 14 months completely cigarette free Ive slowly weened myself down from 24mg to just 6.Next month I will be at 0mg (keeping a 50mil bottle of the 6mg stuff for an emergency).

I smoked 2 packs a day for 25 years.I dont do anything half-assed :) If I can quit, anyone can.

I smoked for 29 years, started vaping on October 2 2013 started at 18mg of nic and every 2 weeks cut down 2mg. currently I am at 8mg and I never had any trouble, its a matter of just doin it, if I did do so can you. And believe me I had 50 million excuses not to stop smoking sooner.
