I moved from 32 guage kanthal to 27 guage. Now, I know it's a thicker wire with less resistance, but my question is....."Is there supposed to be a small delay(2-3 seconds) before I start to hear it sizzle? Seems like it lags before it starts to heat up. I am using a mech k100 mod and rda.
It is the extra mass of the wire making it take longer to heat up. I noticed this same thing when I got some 28ga kanthal and started to make some microcoils. Some of those coils took forever to heat up. I have since gone back to my 32ga and am thinking about getting some 30ga or ribbon wire to test out.
Final resistance is at 1.2 ohms. 3mm silica folded in half, wrapped 7-8 times, single coil. It looks like it takes a second to get going, but when it does, it stays hot. when i let it sit for a minute, it does it all over again. like it has trouble warming up or getting warmed up.

Yeah, I did the same thing and ordered 30 guage kanthal to see if I like that outcome more. 32 guage seems to heat instantly which I like, but I'm not allowed to give it more wraps without upping the resistance which I don't want. I like it around 1.0-1.8 ohm range.

A 1.5 coil for example will draw the same current no matter what gauge wire is used to make it. You may end up drawing more current from a setup that takes longer to heat up as you will probably be running it longer per hit so that it heats up better. What I would do with my microcoils that took a while to heat up was fire them for a sec before I brought my PV to my lips. Or when I used a VV device I just upped the voltage a little, both of these did give me a hit on battery life. 28ga seems to be best used in sub ohm coils from my experience, never used 27ga.
