my attempt at my first mod

im using this as my start, its a turbo charge ipod charger. it uses 2 aa type batteries, and i have 2 energizer 2300mAh batts for it. it has 2 leds as a flashlight and 3 leds behind the blue plastic that serves as a battery level indicator.

i have it all apart, removed the output jack and "hotwired" a tw tornado atty connector to it, as soon as it makes a connection it kills the unit, remove the connector and it comes back to life. the atty works, i tested it on a 9v, worked really good like that lol. tried a standard res and a low res atty and it kills it. i believe its a protection circuit killing power but not sure.

any help would be great i can get pics and am planning to do a complete write up on this as i think its a very good start to a mod and I like the easy aa batteries, and level indicator. i believe the unit must convert the aa power from a combined 2.4v to 5v for charging but not sure

theres another mod on here that uses 4 aaa batts with a 901 i believe... correct me if im wrong but usb power is 5v. then a ipod charger should be 5v. the charger will charge an ipod touch 3 times on a set of batts... i think it should work, maybe not the longest lasting, but those batts are cheap and readily available.

ok ive done some searching, and some thinking. so im thinking "boost" a 14500 to 5v, then make it variable voltage. i have some soldering, and wiring skills and some good ideas, but dont know much beyond there. what would i use to boost it to 5v or possibly 6v would be nice. and what would i use to vary the voltage? small components would be good.

thanks... and sorry if im a pain in the @$$, im new and id really like to make something new to play around with at the house

ive finally made it out to my shop (corner of my dads shop :p) and remembered to grab my multimeter and soldering iron. i crudely soldered an old ego atty connector to the wires that went to the jack that charged the ipod. i ran the multimeter on it, got 5.16v without a load. under load with a LR 510 atty i get from 3.1 - 3.4v. so my original theory of it putting out 5v was right. wrong under load. thats just regular ol duracells also, i think that maybe some ultimate lithiums might help boost output voltage some maybe

so my guess is that the mah rating is too low on the duracells to keep up with it, would that be right?

edit: oh i also managed to get it to fire this time. although not too good. but it was an old LR atty and it dont work good on an ego anymore... didnt wanna fry a good atty JIC, they arent cheep
