Smokers, do not apply: U-Haul won't hire nicotine users in 21 states

U-Haul. Not even medical institutions like hospitals or whatnot. U-Haul.

What's next for employees? BMI? Genetic testing? Pizza monitoring?

So you're a 15 Year Middle Manager overseeing a cube farm with stellar performance reviews and like to smoke a Cigar ever now and again.

But you come up Dirty on some Random screening test.

So what do you get for your 15 Years of Great Performance at U-Haul?

A U-Haul Box to clean out your Desk!

    ... But still...

But still... it is an Overt form of Discrimination.

And let me adjust my Tin Foil Hat while I say that Companies who engage in this type of Hiring Practice are usually the same one's who go Out-of-their-Way to find a reason to Snit Can an existing employee if they know they use Nicotine.

The currently employed nic users will be forced out rather than directly terminated. Uhaul will make their facilities nic-free. Employees will only be able to leave company property to get their "fix". Caveat: Leaving company property during work shift will result in dimissal.

The company's primary concern is lowering health care costs.
When did insurance companies take over the world?
When healthcare costs and big-pharma went through the roof, and then they all also took over congress... So from the Powell memo/Reaganomics onward. Happens with e-cigs too...

    Just a guess. ;)

It's got little to do with insurance companies per se. Most large employers (ones with 1000 or more employees) use self-funded health care. This is not terribly obvious, because they still use an insurance company to administer the health care benefits, but they're really only paying the insurance company an administrative fee. See:
