Hi guys,

You might remember a few months back when UCLA announced that it would ban smoking and electronic cigarettes on campus. Well, it appears that other UCs are following suit. I just got this email from the Interim Chancellor of UC Riverside:

To: UCR Community

Re: UCR Smoke/tobacco-Free Policy: Review and Comment

The University of California is committed to providing a healthy, safe, and clean environment for students, faculty, staff, alumni, and visitors. On January 9th, 2012, President Mark Yudof announced to all Chancellors that the University of California, as a national leader in healthcare and environmental practices, will be smoke-free. Therefore, UCR will become smoke/tobacco-free effective January 2, 2014.

Once the policy is implemented, smoking and the use of smokeless tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and unregulated nicotine products will be prohibited on any UCR owned or leased property, both indoor and outdoor spaces, including parking lots and private residential space.

You can view the proposed policy at http://tobaccofree.ucr.edu/.

Please submit your comments to tobaccofree@ucr.edu no later than Monday, April 22.

I look forward to your support in making health and well-being a priority.

Sincerely,

Jane Close Conoley
Interim Chancellor
